A technician in a plain gray work shirt kneels beside a stainless pellet grill on a patio, the side hopper open and empty and its front panel removed to show the auger motor, a small new motor in his hand, the grill cold and unplugged, daylight, seasonless.

What the pellet grill auger and controller repair
involves.

A pellet grill runs on a loop: the controller reads a temperature probe, turns the auger motor to feed pellets, keeps the hot rod glowing until the fire catches, and sets the combustion fan to feed it air. When the grill will not hold heat or will not start, one link in that loop has stopped. The technician empties the hopper, looks at the pellets, and clears any swollen, set sawdust from the auger and its tube. The auger motor is run from the controller's test mode where the grill offers one, or its voltage checked, and its shaft and pin looked at for a break. The hot rod is measured and watched glowing, the fan checked for ash and a stiff bearing, and the firepot for the burnt crust that blocks its air holes. The temperature probe is compared against a reference thermometer and cleaned or replaced, and any code on the display is read against the maker's own list. Wet connectors are dried and sealed. Failed parts are replaced with the maker's own, the controller's firmware updated where the maker publishes it, and the grill runs through a full start and a steady hold before the visit ends.

How the visit goes

Pellet grill auger and controller repair,
step by step.

Run the grill through a full start and leave it holding a steady set temperature.

01

Read any code on the display, empty the hopper, and look at the pellets for damp and dust.

02

Clear the auger and its tube, and test the auger motor, shaft and pin.

03

Test the hot rod, the combustion fan and the firepot's air holes, and compare the probe to a reference thermometer.

04

Replace the approved motor, rod, fan, probe or controller, and dry and seal any wet connector.

05

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Humidity is the pellet grill's worst enemy in Tampa Bay: pellets left in the hopper swell into a sawdust paste that jams the auger, and the repair clears the tube, tests the motor and advises emptying the hopper after each cook.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's summer storms bring rain and power blips, and a pellet grill's controller may stop mid-cook or lose its settings after a surge, so the repair checks the controller, the outlet and the hot rod before a new board is ordered.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida's damp air swells pellets in the hopper and corrodes the controller's connectors, so an auger that stalls or a display that flickers on a waterfront patio is traced through both before any part is replaced.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Pellet grills are rare on New York terraces, where many buildings limit smoke and open fires, and those in Brooklyn and Queens backyards get their auger and controller checked after a damp winter with pellets left inside.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston's smoking culture runs pellet grills through twelve-hour briskets, and a combustion fan that tires or a probe that reads wrong shows up late in a long cook, so the repair tests the fan, the hot rod, the auger and each probe.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland pellet grills kept in an unheated garage over winter can draw moisture into the pellets and the controller, and the spring repair clears a swollen auger, dries the connectors and confirms the hot rod still lights the firepot.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles pellet grills run all year and often use Wi-Fi controllers, so grit in the auger motor or a controller that drops its connection is common, and on red-flag days owners in the hills check local rules on outdoor fires before a long smoke.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego's inland pellet grills work through dry heat and fire season while coastal ones fight damp pellets, so the repair here clears jams, checks probe readings and notes the local fire-weather limits on outdoor burning.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area pellet grills meet fog-damp pellets near the water and red-flag days inland, and the repair clears the auger and tests the hot rod, fan and controller, while the owner keeps the local rules on outdoor fires in mind.

Questions about
the pellet grill auger and controller repair.

Why does my pellet grill swing up and down in temperature?
Some swing is normal as the controller feeds in bursts. Wide swings usually come from a dirty or failing probe, damp or poor pellets, a firepot choked with ash, wind across the grill, or a weak fan. The probe and the firepot are the first two things we check.
Can wet pellets damage a pellet grill?
Yes. Damp pellets swell into a paste that hardens in the auger tube, and the motor can break its shear pin or burn out trying to push it. Keep the hopper covered, empty it before a long idle spell, and do not run the grill on pellets that have gone soft.
Does a pellet grill need its controller replaced when it shows a code?
Rarely on the first try. Most codes point at a part the controller is watching, such as the probe, the igniter or the fan, and the controller itself is the answer only once those check out.
