A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Wolf grills,
specifically.

Wolf makes four outdoor gas grills, the OG30, OG36, OG42 and OG54, pairing grill burners over ceramic briquettes with an infrared sear burner and an infrared rotisserie burner. All four build into an island and the three smaller ones can also sit on a Wolf cart. All the burners use hot-surface ignition, so a grill that will not light is traced through the breaker and the GFCI before the gas.

Error codesWolf lists no codes for its outdoor grills, which have no display. The thing to watch is the hot-surface igniter glowing when a knob is pushed in; the LED knob lights are only lighting.

What is particular
to Wolf.

The OG30, OG36, OG42 and OG54 are the four Wolf grill widths; the first three can be built in or set on a cart, and the OG54 goes into an island only. One use and care guide covers them all, so the ignition and lighting checks are the same across the line.

Igniters hidden in the flash tubes

Wolf's hot-surface igniters sit below the grates, inside the flash tubes. The lighting steps start with pushing the knob in and seeing the glow before turning to HI, and when there is no power the burners can still be lit with a long lighter passed through the grates.

Keep water off the sear burner

Wolf warns against letting any liquid touch the infrared sear burner's ceramic tiles and against setting briquette trays or the smoker box over it. A cracked tile is the kind of damage those warnings exist to prevent, so it is one of the first things checked on that burner.

Carts for three sizes, not four

Wolf designs its grill carts for the OG30, OG36 and OG42, while the OG54 is built-in only. Knowing which one is on the patio tells the technician whether to look for a cart's hose and tank or a supply line and shutoff inside the island.

Two sets of lights, one button

A single front-panel button runs the halogen interior lights and the LED knob lights. The interior lights go out when the hood closes while the knob lights stay on, which is normal; when they stay dark, Wolf points to the breaker, the GFCI and a spent 10-watt G4 halogen bulb.

Parts

Hot-surface igniters, the infrared sear burner, briquettes and G4 halogen bulbs are Wolf-specific parts matched by model on the rating plate. The same plate shows whether the grill is set for natural gas or LP.

Repair or replace

Wolf grills are built as long-life stainless heads, so an igniter, sear burner or valve is normally worth replacing. A burner box that has corroded through on an older head is where a new grill enters the conversation.

Questions about
Wolf grills.

Why doesn't my Wolf grill igniter glow?
Wolf's hot-surface igniters need power, so check that the breaker is on and the GFCI outlet has not tripped. Until it is sorted, Wolf allows lighting the burners with a long lighter through the grates while the knob is held in at HI.
Why do the Wolf grill interior lights go out when I close the hood?
That is by design: the halogen interior lights switch off with the hood down while the LED knob lights stay on. Press the front-panel button again to turn everything off.
What does Wolf suggest when the grill flame keeps blowing out?
Its guide checks the gas supply first and, on a windy patio, adds a wind block. Wolf also warns that spiders and insects nesting in burners are a fire hazard, so burners that heat poorly are inspected for them.
Can a Wolf OG54 grill go on a cart?
No. Wolf makes carts for the OG30, OG36 and OG42 only and designs the OG54 for built-in use.
