Is yours
a pellet?

A pellet grill cooks on hardwood pellets fed one small scoop at a time. The pellets sit in a hopper on the side, an electric motor turns an auger that pushes them into a steel firepot, and a hot rod glows inside that pot to set them alight at the start of a cook. A combustion fan blows air through the pot to keep the fire going, and a heat baffle and a sloped grease tray spread the heat and carry drippings away. A controller reads a temperature probe inside the box and decides how often the auger turns and how hard the fan blows, and many now talk to a phone over Wi-Fi and read one or more meat probes. A hybrid grill is a different answer to the same wish for smoke: a gas grill with a charcoal tray or a wood drawer dropped over its burners, or a grill whose firebox takes gas, charcoal and logs in turn. Pellet grills fail like small machines, through motors, fans, sensors and boards; hybrids fail like gas grills that also have to live with ash, and both are covered here.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands beside an open stainless gas grill on a patio, the grates and heat shields lifted out and laid on the side shelf, looking down at the burners with a small flashlight, his hands away from any gas fitting or knob, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless. What fails on a pellet and hybrid grill

How to tell

01

A hopper stands on one side of the cooking box with a lid over it, and a small motor housing sits where the hopper meets the box.

02

A digital controller with a display and a dial or buttons sits on the hopper front, and it takes a wall plug instead of a battery.

03

At start-up a fan hums and white smoke rolls out for a few minutes before the fire settles to a thin blue smoke.

04

On a hybrid, a gas grill's knobs and burners are joined by a charcoal tray, a wood drawer or a firebox built to take logs.

What fails
on this design.

On a pellet and hybrid grill: auger jammed by swollen pellets, hot rod igniter burned out, combustion fan, probe and controller, grease fires in the drip path.

The problems it shows

Auger jammed by swollen pellets

Pellets that took on rain or damp air turn back into sawdust and set like cement in the auger tube. The motor hums or stalls, the fire starves, and the controller reports a low temperature or a flame loss while the hopper looks full.

Hot rod igniter burned out

The igniter rod lives in the fire and wears out with it. When it fails, the grill feeds pellets that never light, the firepot overfills, and a later start can light that heap all at once with a puff of smoke from the lid.

Combustion fan, probe and controller

A fan clogged with ash or seized by damp weakens the fire, an RTD probe coated in soot reads low, and the controller chases the wrong number with long swings above and below the set point. A board that took water through the display shows errors, resets, or will not wake at all.

Grease fires in the drip path

Drippings collect on the heat baffle and the tray below it, and a long hot cook can light them. On a hybrid, ash and grease together clog the burners under the charcoal tray and rust them faster than on a gas-only grill.

Getting at it,
and whether to.

Please leave the grill plugged in and the hopper as it is, full or empty, so the auger and the controller can be run and watched.

What repairs cost

On the visit

  1. Let the grill cool completely and do not reach into the firepot or clear it by hand while it is warm.
  2. Tell us what the display shows, including any code, and whether the pellets have been in the hopper through rain or a wet stretch.
  3. On a hybrid, tell us which fuel you were using when the problem began and whether the gas side still lights on its own.

Repair or replace

Most pellet grill repairs are parts that makers sell for exactly this reason: an igniter, an auger motor, a fan, a probe or a controller, each modest next to a new grill. It becomes a real choice when the controller of an older model is no longer made and a replacement board would change how the grill runs, or when the firepot and box have rusted through from pellets left to rot inside. The technician explains which it is, and you choose.

Questions about
pellet and hybrid grills.

Why does my pellet grill smoke heavily and then go out?
It is usually starving: the auger has stopped feeding, the pellets are damp, or the fan is too weak to keep the pot burning. The heavy smoke is pellets smoldering without enough air. Let it cool, empty the hopper if the pellets are soft or swollen, and book a visit if fresh, dry pellets do the same.
Is it safe to restart a pellet grill after it shut down mid-cook?
Not straight away. A pot full of unburned pellets can ignite in one rush on the next start. Let the grill cool, follow the maker's shutdown and cleanout steps, and only then start again. Never reach into a warm firepot.
Do you work on grills that burn both gas and charcoal?
Yes. The gas side is handled like any gas grill, with its burners, valves and igniters, and the charcoal or wood side is checked for the ash and rust it leaves on the parts below it.
