A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

A Solaire call centers on the infrared burners: the tech watches each one come up to an even glow and looks for dark patches on the emitter.

Solaire grills,
specifically.

Solaire is the infrared grill line of Rasmussen Iron Works in Whittier, California, sold from 21-inch portables up to a 56-inch grill with dual side burners, as built-ins and on carts, posts and pedestals. Most Solaires run all infrared burners and the InfraVection models mix infrared with conventional burners, so the first thing we confirm on a visit is which burners your grill carries.

Error codesSolaire grills have no display and publish no codes. Solaire's own troubleshooting works from what you can see and hear instead: a yellow or orange flame with a gas smell, burners that pop, and a spark you can watch jump at the igniter tip.

Book with what the grill is doing and the model plate; the visit starts from the symptom.

What is particular
to Solaire.

We service Solaire all-infrared and InfraVection grills in 21, 27, 30, 36, 42 and 56-inch sizes, built in or on carts, posts and pedestals, including models with a rear infrared rotisserie burner. Solaire ships most grills set for propane with a natural gas conversion kit, while 56-inch models are built for one gas.

A blocked burner can burn behind the panel

Solaire warns that spiders and insects nesting in a burner can push gas out of its front, where it can catch fire behind the valve panel. It asks for an inspection at least twice a year, and at once if the flame turns yellow with a gas smell, heat is uneven or the burners pop.

One igniter for every burner

Each Solaire burner has its own igniter with a push button on the front panel. When one will not light, Solaire has you watch for a spark at that tip and reset the gap to 1/8 inch before looking further.

No foil on the grids or the grill floor

Solaire's manual says foil on the grids or the grill bottom upsets the airflow and traps heat around the controls, which can melt knobs and igniters. Only the drip tray may be lined.

Water is hard on the burners

Solaire tells owners never to let water reach the burner, because the damage that follows is not something a cleaning fixes. A grill left uncovered in the rain is one we check burner by burner.

Parts

Solaire lists burners, igniter wires in several lengths and drip trays by grill size and series. InfraVection burner kits let a burner position be switched between infrared and conventional.

Repair or replace

Solaire grills are welded stainless steel, so an igniter, a burner or a cleaned-out burner inlet is almost always worth the repair. Fire damage behind the valve panel is the case where we size up the whole grill first.

Questions about
Solaire grills.

Why does my Solaire flame look yellow and smell of gas?
Solaire links that combination to insects or spiders in the burner. Turn the burner off, close the gas supply and book a visit, because gas escaping at the front of a blocked burner can start a fire behind the valve panel.
My Solaire igniter clicks but the burner won't light. What should I check?
Solaire's list starts with a fresh battery in the igniter module and a clean tip with a 1/8 inch spark gap. If the spark is good and the burner still will not light, the gas supply or the orifice is next.
Can I line my Solaire with aluminum foil?
Only the drip tray. Solaire warns that foil on the grids or the grill bottom traps heat around the controls and can melt the knobs and igniters.
Can my Solaire run on natural gas?
Most Solaires ship set for propane with a natural gas conversion kit included; 56-inch models are made for one gas. A conversion changes orifices and needs a leak test, so it is a job for a visit.
