A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

XO
Grill Repair

XO grill service begins with the basics a homeowner can see: whether the tank valve is open, the igniter clicks and each knob turns cleanly.

XO grills,
specifically.

XO sells two gas grill families: the Pro-Grade grills, with cast stainless burners beside a variable ceramic infrared burner, and the Performance XLT series with tubular burners. Both install in an island or on an XO cart, and both light with a push-and-turn Flame Thrower ignition that needs no battery or outlet.

Error codesXO grills show no codes, and the blue knob LEDs are lighting only. XO describes what you see and hear instead, such as a whoosh from an infrared burner or a yellow flame.

What is particular
to XO.

Pro-Grade grills come as the XOGRILL30, 36 and 42, and the Performance XLT as the XOGRILL32XLT2 and XOGRILL40XLT2; each can be built in or set on an XO cart. The XLT uses tubular burners with a ceramic infrared rear burner, while the Pro-Grade adds an infrared burner to the main grate.

Ignition with no battery to change

XO's Flame Thrower ignition is push-and-turn and draws no power, so a grill that will not light is never waiting on a battery. When the igniter fails but a match works, XO names a dirty or wet electrode, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, or a blocked valve.

Infrared in the grate and at the back

The Pro-Grade grills set a variable ceramic infrared burner in the main grate next to the cast stainless burners, and XO grills carry a ceramic infrared rotisserie burner at the back. XO's notes on its infrared burners cover holding the knob in for 30 seconds after lighting and running a clogged one on high until it glows evenly.

Lights that depend on the transformer

The blue control-panel LEDs and halogen work lights run from a transformer plugged into a GFCI outlet. When the panel goes dark, XO's checks are the plug, the GFCI, the transformer's 12-volt output and the push-button switch.

A hum that needs no service

XO lists a humming regulator as ordinary internal vibration that needs no service. The same troubleshooting table ties a yellow flame with a smell of gas to insects blocking the burner venturi, which is a different matter entirely.

Parts

Burners, ceramic infrared burners, electrodes and the lighting transformer differ between the Pro-Grade and XLT families, so the model number on the grill decides the part. The last letter of that number, L or N, shows whether it is set for propane or natural gas.

Repair or replace

An XO grill with a sound body is usually worth fixing when an electrode, burner or infrared burner fails. A cracked ceramic burner is a replacement part, not a reason to replace the grill.

Questions about
XO grills.

Does my XO grill igniter need a battery?
No. XO's Flame Thrower ignition is push-and-turn with no battery and no electrical connection. The outlet and transformer feed only the lights and the rotisserie motor.
Why does the infrared burner on my XO grill make a whoosh sound?
XO links a whoosh, a flashback or a dimming surface to ceramic ports clogged with debris. Turn the burner off for two minutes, relight it and run it on high for about five minutes until it glows red evenly; a cracked ceramic needs a visit.
Why is the flame low on my XO grill even on High?
XO points to an undersized supply line on built-in grills and a kinked or restricted hose on freestanding ones, along with a dirty orifice or venturi. Straighten the hose first; supply pipe sizing is a question for the visit.
Is a humming sound from my XO grill regulator normal?
Yes. XO describes it as common internal vibration and says no service is needed.
