A technician in a plain gray work shirt kneels at the open front panel of a stainless gas grill on a patio, holding a small new spark module in one hand while the grill's knobs sit at off, an electrode wire visible behind the panel, daylight, seasonless.

What the grill igniter repair
involves.

A grill lights in one of a few ways. A push-button piezo cracks a crystal to make one spark; a battery-powered spark module clicks for as long as the button is held or the knob is pushed in; a mains-powered module does the same from a transformer; and some premium heads use a hot-surface igniter that glows to light the gas. Each burner then has an electrode, a metal tip in a ceramic sleeve, set a small gap from a port or a collector box. The technician first watches the spark in shade at each burner. No click at all points at the battery, the button, the switch or the module; a click with no spark at one burner points at its wire or electrode; a spark that jumps to the wrong metal means the gap has drifted or the ceramic has cracked. Wires are traced where they pass close to the firebox, since heat and grease cook their insulation. The module, electrode or wire that failed is replaced with the maker's part, gaps are set to the maker's figure, and each burner is lit from its own spark several times before the visit ends.

How the visit goes

Grill igniter repair,
step by step.

Light every burner from its own spark several times, and leave it catching at the first try.

01

Watch the spark at each burner in shade, and listen for the module's click with each button or knob.

02

Test the battery, the button or switch and the spark module, or the power to a mains or hot-surface system.

03

Trace each electrode wire along the firebox, and check each ceramic sleeve and gap.

04

Replace the failed module, electrode or wire with the maker's part, and set each gap.

05

Light every burner from its own spark several times, and leave it catching at the first try.

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether you hear clicking at all, and whether any burners still light from the button
  2. Whether the grill uses a battery, a push button or a plug for its igniter
  3. Whether the problem began after rain, a cleaning or a new battery
  4. The make and model from the rating plate

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Moisture is the igniter's enemy on a Tampa Bay lanai: a wet electrode lead, a corroded battery contact or a spark module soaked by a summer downpour stops the click, and the repair starts by drying and testing each wire.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando's afternoon storms reach grills even under a screen enclosure, and an igniter that clicks on a dry day but not after rain usually has a cracked ceramic insulator or a lead with split sheathing letting the spark jump short.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

Salt residue bridges the gap on igniter electrodes in South Florida, so the spark lands on the burner bracket instead of in the gas, and the technician cleans or replaces the electrode and resets the gap to the maker's figure.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York rooftop grills open the season after months of cold and snow, and a spark module with a dead battery or a corroded terminal is the most common reason a terrace grill will not light on its first warm evening.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Heat inside a Houston grill's control panel on a summer afternoon can crack an aging spark module or a hot-surface igniter's leads, and fire ants sometimes pack into the module housing, so both are opened when the clicking stops.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

In Chicagoland an igniter often dies over the winter as ice forms around its electrode or a mouse chews its wire under the cover, and the spring repair runs new leads and tests every burner's spark before the first cookout.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles grills light hundreds of times a year, so electrodes wear and spark modules tire sooner here, and fine grit carried in by dry winds settles on the tip; the repair cleans, re-gaps or replaces those parts in one visit.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Damp coastal air in San Diego corrodes an igniter's crimped connections long before the electrode itself wears, so a weak spark by the beach is traced along the wire first, while inland grills more often need a new module.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Wind across Bay Area decks can carry unlit gas away from the electrode and make a sound igniter look dead, so the technician tests it with the lid up and down and checks the electrode gap before replacing anything.

Questions about
the grill igniter repair.

The igniter clicks but the grill will not light. What is wrong?
The spark is probably landing where the gas is not: an electrode knocked out of line, a gap too wide, a cracked ceramic that lets the spark jump to the frame, or ports near the electrode closed by rust. A wet module can also click with too weak a spark to light anything.
Is it safe to light a grill with a match when the igniter fails?
Many makers describe a match-lighting method in the manual, through a hole in the side or with a long holder, with the lid open. Follow that method exactly and never hold gas on for long before lighting; if the burner does not light within a few seconds, turn it off and let the gas clear.
Why does my grill igniter only fail when it is damp?
Moisture in the button, the module or a cracked electrode sleeve lets the spark leak to ground before it reaches the burner. It often comes back when things dry out, which is why the part is replaced rather than dried.
