A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Napoleon
Grill Repair

Napoleon grills get checked from the tank up: regulator, hose, valves, then the main, sear and rear burners in that order.

Napoleon grills,
specifically.

Napoleon's US grills are gas grills with knobs, sold on carts as the Rogue, Prestige and Prestige PRO and as Built-in 500, 700 and Prestige PRO heads, and many of them carry an infrared burner. With no screen to read, a Napoleon visit starts with the flame itself: its color, its sound and whether it stays on the burner.

Error codesNapoleon gas grills have knobs and no display, so they show no error codes. The one light signal in the manual is the knob backlight, which glows red for a burner that is on and blue for one that is off.

What is particular
to Napoleon.

We work on Napoleon Rogue, Rogue PRO, Prestige and Prestige PRO cart grills and on the Built-in 500, 700 and Prestige PRO heads. The Built-in 700 has dual rear infrared rotisserie burners and the Built-in Prestige PRO adds an infrared SIZZLE ZONE burner, so those heads have more burners to test.

Infrared burners that can flash back

Napoleon's manual describes an infrared flashback as a loud whoosh followed by a steady blowtorch sound. Grease-clogged ceramic tiles, a griddle or pan covering more than 75 percent of the surface, or a cracked housing can cause it, and the cracked burner is replaced as a whole assembly.

An insect screen is not a guarantee

Napoleon fits a screen over the air shutter, but its manual says that only lowers the odds of a nest. A web in the burner can turn the flame soft yellow or orange and cause a fire or flashback at the air shutter, under the control panel.

Knobs that tell you which burner is open

On models with lighted knobs, a knob for a burner in use glows red while the rest stay blue. We use that to confirm which valve is open before we touch anything under the panel.

JETFIRE ignition still has parts to check

JETFIRE sends a small jet of flame to each burner instead of relying on one spark across the grill. When a burner will not light, Napoleon's table points to a clogged jet outlet, dirty cross-light brackets, a dead or wrongly fitted battery, or a loose electrode wire.

Parts

A cracked Napoleon infrared burner is replaced as a complete burner assembly rather than patched. Tube burners, igniter parts and sear plates are ordered by the model number on the rating plate.

Repair or replace

Napoleon heads are built from stainless steel and serviced part by part, so a burner, an igniter or a set of sear plates is rarely a reason to replace the grill. A cracked infrared burner is a part swap too, not a new grill.

Questions about
Napoleon grills.

My Napoleon infrared burner suddenly roared like a blowtorch. What happened?
That is the flashback sound Napoleon's manual describes. Turn the burner off and let it cool, and if it happens again or you see cracks in the ceramic, book a visit rather than relighting it.
Can I cook with charcoal on my Napoleon gas grill?
Yes, with Napoleon's charcoal tray. You take out the grids and sear plates over the burners, set the tray in with lump charcoal and light the gas burners under it.
Why is the regulator on my Napoleon humming?
Napoleon says a humming regulator on a hot day is normal and is caused by vibration inside it. Hum together with a weak flame or a gas smell is a different matter and needs a visit.
Why does my Napoleon only get to low heat on propane?
The usual cause is the lighting order. Napoleon asks that every burner knob be off before the tank valve is opened, and that the tank be opened slowly so the pressure can settle.
