A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands beside an open stainless gas grill on a patio, the grates and heat shields lifted out and laid on the side shelf, looking down at the burners with a small flashlight, his hands away from any gas fitting or knob, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

What the grill diagnostic visit
involves.

A grill diagnostic visit follows the gas and the spark in the order they travel. The technician first asks what the grill did the last time it worked and what changed since: a new tank, a hard rain, a long idle winter, a grease fire. Then the supply: tank, regulator and hose, or the house shutoff and its flex line, looked at for cracks, rust and age, and every joint tested by an electronic sniffer or, where the manual permits, bubbles of soapy water. A flame is never used to hunt for gas. With the grates, shields and grease tray out, each burner is inspected for rust, split ports and blocked venturi necks, the orifices are looked at against the gas the grill runs on, and every burner is lit and its flame judged for height, color and steadiness. The ignition is tested burner by burner, electrode gaps and wires included. On a grill with lights, a rotisserie or a pellet controller, the power, the motor and any code on the display are read. You get one list: the part that failed, what else is wearing, and what each repair involves, before anything is replaced.

How the visit goes

Grill diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Hand you a written sheet of the failed part, the parts that are wearing, and the cost of each fix, before a wrench is turned.

01

Hear what happened and when, and look over the grill, its cover, the ground under it and where it stands.

02

Check the tank or house supply, the regulator and the hose for damage and leaks, with a detector or approved soapy solution.

03

Pull the grates, shields and tray, look over each burner tube, venturi neck and orifice, then fire the burners one by one and judge the flames.

04

Test the igniter on each burner, then the lights, the rotisserie motor or the pellet controller where the grill has them.

05

Hand you a written sheet of the failed part, the parts that are wearing, and the cost of each fix, before a wrench is turned.

Grill Gas Smell at the Burners or the Tank: What to Do Now

6 causes, cheapest first

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. What the grill does now, and whether it began after a tank change, rain, a long idle spell or a flare-up
  2. Whether it is a built-in head, a cart, an infrared grill or a pellet or hybrid grill
  3. Tank or house gas, and where the grill's shutoff valve sits
  4. The make and model from the rating plate, and roughly how old the grill is

These four steps rank grill repairs against each other; they are not a figure for your grill. Low flame may be a regulator in bypass, a web in a venturi, a tired valve or a burner rotted open, and a dead igniter may want a battery or a whole module; a phone call cannot tell which. Your grill is taken apart as far as it needs, its gas and spark checked and each burner lit before any figure is given. You hear the cost first, the parts go in only after that, and saying yes or no is up to you.

The patio, the climate and the building all change how the grill diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

A diagnostic visit in Tampa Bay usually starts on a screened lanai or a bayside patio, where the technician lifts the grates, watches how each burner flame stands up to the Gulf breeze and looks into the venturi tubes for the mud daubers that nest there in warm months.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando grills are lit by residents and by vacation-rental guests alike, so a diagnostic visit there asks how many hands have turned the knobs lately before it tests the igniter, the regulator and every burner's flame one after another.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida the diagnostic visit may reach a grill on a condo's shared pool deck, a Coral Gables patio or a dock, and it begins with what salt and humidity have done to the stainless before a single burner is lit.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York diagnostic visits often end on a terrace or a roof reached by freight elevator, so the building is told ahead, and the technician confirms the grill's fuel, usually piped natural gas up there, before testing burners and igniter.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston grills cook through most of the year, and a diagnostic visit in Harris or Fort Bend County checks heat-soaked knobs, burner ports eaten by humid rust and the webs that summer spiders leave in the air shutters before naming a part.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A Chicagoland diagnostic visit usually lands in spring, when a grill that sat under a cover through the snow is lit again and shows a rusted burner, a spark module with a dead battery or a mouse nest under the grease tray.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles grills rarely rest, so a diagnostic visit from the Valley to the Westside looks for the marks of steady use: ports worn wide by grease, a tired electrode, flavorizer bars thinned through and a pellet auger slowed by grit.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego grills live either under the damp coastal marine layer or in dry inland heat, and the diagnostic visit starts by noting which, because salt pitting and sun-baked knobs and wiring call for different parts.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area diagnostic visits cover windy city decks, Peninsula patios and hot East Bay yards; the technician checks how the wind hits the burner flames, whether the grill runs on piped gas or a tank, and what each burner and igniter does before quoting.

Questions about
the grill diagnostic visit.

Does the grill diagnostic visit look at the island around a built-in grill?
It covers the grill head and the gas and power that reach it, so a leak at the connector under the head or a dead outlet for its light is found. A cooler, side burner or warming drawer in the same island belongs to our sister site, and the technician points you to it.
Should I clean the grill before the technician comes?
Please leave it as it is. Grease on the shields, ash in the tray and the color of rust on the burners show how the grill has been running. Just take the cover off and clear the shelves.
Can the grill be checked if it is raining?
The gas side often can, under a patio roof. Lights, a rotisserie motor and a pellet controller are not opened in the wet, so heavy rain on an open patio moves the visit.
