A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Weber
Grill Repair

Weber grill calls often come from a flame that dropped low mid-cook; the tech starts at the tank, the hose and the regulator.

Weber grills,
specifically.

Weber grills reach us in two kinds: Spirit, Genesis and Summit gas grills run on knobs and show no codes, while the Searwood and SmokeFire pellet grills carry a Weber Connect controller that puts E-codes on its screen and sends them to your phone. Knowing which kind you own tells us before the visit whether we start at the burners or at the controller.

The Weber lineup

What is particular
to Weber.

We service Weber Spirit, Genesis and Summit gas grills, the Summit SB38 built-in head, and the Searwood and SmokeFire pellet grills. SmokeFire uses E1 to E9, and the Searwood list runs further, up to E21, so the model name on the grill matters when we read a code.

Pellet codes come in two weights

Weber splits Searwood codes into errors that shut the grill down until the cause is fixed and notifications you can clear by pressing the dial and keep cooking. We ask which one you saw first, because a notification such as a temperature drop rarely needs a technician.

The controller retests itself

After a Searwood is cleaned or a plug is reseated, starting a cook makes the controller run a check that takes up to 30 seconds with the fan running. If the code does not return, the fix held; if it does, the part itself is next.

An infrared broiler over the food on Summit

The current Summit SB38 built-in and FS38 cart grills have a 16,000 BTU top-down infrared broiler above the grates, separate from the five main burners. When the top browning stops, we check that burner and its ignition on their own.

Lit knobs that run on batteries

Summit models add LED-backlit knobs and NIGHTVISION lights over the grates, and Weber's spec sheet lists AA, C and D cells among the batteries they take. Dark knobs on a Summit are often a battery change before they are a wiring repair.

Parts

Weber matches parts to the serial number on the grill, and a Searwood controller's serial also shows in the Weber Connect app under the grill's settings. Pellet parts such as the glow plug, fan, auger motor and probe hub are specific to the model.

Repair or replace

A cleared auger jam, a reseated fan plug or a new glow plug is a routine repair on a Weber pellet grill, and burners and Flavorizer bars on a Weber gas grill are made to be replaced. A cookbox rusted through on an older cart grill is where a new grill deserves a real comparison.

Questions about
Weber grills.

Why does my Weber Searwood shut down on some codes but not others?
Weber treats codes like an auger jam or a failed fan as errors the grill cannot cook through, so it runs its shutdown. Codes like a low fuel warning are notifications you clear with the dial, and the cook carries on.
Is it normal for my Weber pellet grill to flare and smoke when it relights?
Yes. Weber says extra pellets gather in the burn pot while the fire is out, so a bigger flame and more smoke are normal for a few minutes after it relights.
Can I unplug my Weber pellet grill to reset a code?
Not during the shutdown cycle, which Weber warns against. Let the cycle finish and the grill cool, then unplug it; an interrupted shutdown shows up as E10 on the next start.
How often should a Weber Searwood be deep cleaned?
Weber recommends a thorough cleaning after 12 hours of cooking or nine cooks, whichever comes first. Ash left in the burn pot is behind several of the codes we see.
