What Tiburon does
to a grill.

Voters formed the peninsula's fire district in April 1941, after serious fires had damaged parts of the railroad yard and several homes.

From May through September the Tiburon Fire Protection District holds monthly chipper days at Blackie's Pasture, where Tiburon and Belvedere residents drop off cut vegetation.

The district's vegetation program splits the required 100 feet of defensible space into three home ignition zones.

On the water

Salt from ocean or bay air settles on a grill every day and pits its stainless within a season, so near salt water the hood hinges, burner ports and igniter electrodes are inspected first, and a fresh-water rinse once it cools is the habit that helps most.

Seasonal houses

Owners closing a seasonal house help the grill most by shutting the tank valve or the gas shutoff, emptying the grease tray and covering the grill only once it is dry, since a cover pulled over damp grease breeds mold.

Premium built-in grill heads

Designed grilling areas often mix makes, a grill head from one maker and a smoker from another, and parts are ordered from each model plate rather than judged by eye, since many premium heads look alike and take different burners.

When a grill
cannot wait in Tiburon.

In Tiburon as anywhere, these four put the people at the grill in danger and mean the gas stays closed until we come: a gas smell at the grill, the hose or the tank, a grease fire that keeps burning with the knobs down, flame curling out behind the control panel, or a knob that turns to off while the burner stays lit.
