A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Fire Magic grills,
specifically.

Fire Magic grills are made by R.H. Peterson in City of Industry, California, in built-in and portable Echelon Diamond, Aurora and Choice lines, with charcoal and gas-and-charcoal combo models beside them. The Echelon touch-panel thermometer and the blue-to-red gas indicators by the knobs give us more to read at a visit than most gas grills offer.

The Fire Magic lineup

What is particular
to Fire Magic.

We work on Fire Magic Echelon Diamond (E660i, E790i, E1060i and the portable E1060s), Aurora (A430i to A790i and the A830i gas and charcoal combo) and Choice grills. The Echelon digital thermometer, backburner and optional infrared burner add parts that an Aurora or Choice may not have.

Knobs that show gas flow

Echelon and Aurora knobs have a small indicator that turns from blue to red when gas is flowing. After a cook it shows at a glance whether every valve is really closed, and a red indicator on a knob at OFF is a stop-and-check sign.

A thermometer that does not run the burners

The Echelon digital thermometer reads the hood and a meat probe and sets alarms, but Fire Magic is clear that it never controls the burners. OH, Err or dashes on its screen say something about the thermometer, not about the gas.

A power supply with its own reset

Lights, ignition and the thermometer run from a power supply in the island with a green light that shows it is working. After an electrical upset it can go into protection mode, which a disconnect-and-reconnect reset clears.

An adjustable LOW setting

When a Fire Magic burner goes out on LOW, the manual treats it as an adjustment screw inside the valve stem. It is set with the burner lit until the flame stands about a quarter inch above the ports.

Parts

Each Fire Magic owner's manual includes a replacement parts list keyed to the model, so the rating plate and the manual together give the part numbers. Fire Magic covers cast stainless burners far longer than its lights and digital thermometers, so older Echelon grills see more electronic repairs.

Repair or replace

Fire Magic grills are built to be rebuilt: burners, valves, igniters and the thermometer are all listed parts. Replacement is worth weighing only when the housing or the firebox itself is failing.

Questions about
Fire Magic grills.

Why does my Fire Magic burner go out on the LOW setting?
Fire Magic treats it as a low-setting adjustment made through the valve stem with the burner lit. It is a small adjustment, but it sits behind the knob on the gas valve, so we make it at a visit.
Does the Fire Magic digital thermometer control the grill temperature?
No. Fire Magic states that the thermometer does not control the burners; they keep running even with the thermometer off.
Can wind damage a Fire Magic grill?
Wind entering the back of the lid is one of the two causes Fire Magic gives for the thermometer board overheating and showing OH, and a wind deflector is its suggestion.
Does Fire Magic make a grill that burns gas and charcoal?
Yes, the Aurora A830i is sold as a gas and charcoal combo built-in grill. We service its gas side the same way as other Aurora grills.
