Grill
Error Code on a Pellet Controller or Digital Panel

A grill error code shows as letters and numbers on a pellet grill controller, a flashing light on a digital control panel, or an alert in the maker's app paired with the grill.

What it
usually means.

Most traditional gas grills show no codes at all: they have knobs, valves and a spark. Codes come from grills with electronics that watch the cook. Pellet and hybrid grills report a fire that failed to light, a chamber that cooled too far, a probe that reads open, an auger that stalled or a fan that stopped. Premium gas heads with digital controls, and grills that connect to a phone, report ignition that did not catch, a flame lost, a temperature sensor out of line and power interruptions. Weber, Napoleon, Lynx, Hestan, Twin Eagles and the other makes publish separate code lists, and a number on one maker's controller tells nothing about another's. Some of what a display shows is simply a mode: a shutdown cycle that keeps the fan running to burn the pot clean, a keep-warm setting, a showroom demo, or a light waiting for the app to pair. On a patio, many codes follow the weather: rain in a probe plug, a power blink during a storm, a hot afternoon on a sunlit display. On this site the codes are sorted into eight families by what they report: modes, ignition, flame and gas flow, temperature and probes, pellet feed and auger, fans and airflow, controller and display, and power. Nothing on a code page asks you to open a gas fitting or reach into a hot firepot.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands beside an open stainless gas grill on a patio, the grates and heat shields lifted out and laid on the side shelf, looking down at the burners with a small flashlight, his hands away from any gas fitting or knob, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless. Answer these first

01

What exactly does the display or app show: letters, numbers or a light pattern?

02

Is it a pellet grill, a hybrid, or a gas grill with a digital panel?

03

Did the code appear during startup, mid-cook or at shutdown?

04

Was there rain, a storm or a power blink before it?

05

Which maker built it, and what model and serial are stamped on its rating plate?

Check these
before you book.

Grill error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Snap the screen, or film a blinking light for a few seconds, before you power anything down.

02

Match the code to your maker on this site, or to the booklet that came with that exact model.

03

Check whether it is a mode before anything else: shutdown, keep-warm, demo and pairing each end their own way.

Also worth checking

  • On a pellet grill, let the shutdown finish and the grill cool fully, unplug it for a minute, then restart and time how long the code takes to return.
  • Keep gas fittings closed and the firepot untouched while warm; when a code keeps returning, book; no cover has to come off to describe it.

How soon does it need a visit?

A code on its own rarely needs a same-day visit. The four emergencies, a gas smell, a grease fire, flame behind the knobs and a knob that will not shut off, are handled on their own pages first.

7 things grill error code on a pellet controller or digital panel turns out to be, from a mode, not a failure to controller, display and power.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    A mode, not a failure

Shutdown cycles, keep-warm, demo and pairing each light a signal of their own. The manual gives the step that ends each one.

  2. 02 low

    Ignition

A hot rod or spark that did not light the fire in time sets an ignition code.

  3. 03 low

    Temperature and probes

A probe coated in grease, a pinched wire or a chamber that cooled too far after a flameout reads as a temperature code.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Flame and gas flow

On digital gas heads, a flame lost mid-cook or gas flow too low to hold it sets a flame code.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Pellet feed and auger

An auger stalled by damp pellets, or a hopper run dry, sets a feed code on many pellet grills.

  6. 06 low to moderate

    Fans and airflow

A combustion or cooling fan that stops or slows is reported before the fire suffers.

  7. 07 moderate

    Controller, display and power

A control board flunking its self-test, dead segments on the screen or a supply dip mid-cook each raise a code of their own.

Questions about
grill error code on a pellet controller or digital panel.

The pellet grill showed a code and shut down mid-cook. Is it safe to restart?
Let it finish its shutdown and cool fully, clear unburned pellets from the cold firepot as the manual shows, then restart. Restarting hot with a full pot can send up a burst of smoke and flame.
Our BBQ is all knobs. Where would its error show?
It has no codes to show. Its problems appear as symptoms instead, such as no spark, a low flame or uneven heat, and each has its own page.
The app says the grill is offline but it cooks fine. Does that need a visit?
Usually not. A Wi-Fi or pairing problem is a network question, and the manual's pairing steps normally restore it.
Can one maker's pellet grill code be read with another maker's manual?
No. Two makers may print an identical number for unrelated problems, so the model number decides what it means.
