A technician in a plain gray work shirt fits a new stainless burner tube into an open gas grill on a patio, the grates and heat shields set aside on the side shelf, an old rusted burner with split ports lying beside them, the knobs all at off, daylight, seasonless.

What the grill burner replacement
involves.

A grill burner is a steel or cast tube with a row of ports along its top and a venturi at the front end, where the gas jet from the orifice pulls in air through a shutter. Over years of grease, salt and rain it rusts from the bottom, its ports widen or fuse into slots, and insects build in its neck. The technician takes out the grates and heat shields, lifts each burner off its orifice, and looks at it end to end in daylight. A burner that is only dirty is brushed, its ports opened with a proper pick and its venturi cleared with a flexible brush. One with torn ports, a crack or a hole is replaced with the maker's part, seated fully over its orifice and fixed at the rear. After that, every burner is lit and watched: flame height along its length, a crisp blue with small yellow tips at most, no lifting and no roar, and no flame curling back toward the knob. The air shutter is set where the grill has one. Heat shields and flavorizer bars that rest on the burners are checked at the same time, because a burner cannot heat evenly under a plate that has collapsed.

How the visit goes

Grill burner replacement,
step by step.

Light every burner and leave the grill with an even, blue flame from end to end and nothing curling toward the knobs.

01

Take out grates and heat shields, and look at each burner in place for rust, splits and the pattern of the flame.

02

Lift each burner off its orifice and clear the venturi of webs, nests and debris with a flexible brush.

03

Clean ports on burners that are sound, and mark those with torn ports, holes or cracks for replacement.

04

Fit the approved burners on their orifices, secure them at the rear, and set the air shutters.

05

Light every burner and leave the grill with an even, blue flame from end to end and nothing curling toward the knobs.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Humid Gulf air and salt spray eat tube burners from the ports outward, so on Tampa Bay grills a burner often rusts through along its underside within a few seasons, and its replacement is matched to the grill's model plate.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Around Orlando's lakes and pools, spiders and wasps build inside burner tubes during quiet weeks, and a burner already thinned by humid heat may split when it is cleared, so a new burner is often the safer answer there.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida burners face salt air in every month with no winter pause, and the cast stainless burners of premium heads tend to outlast thin tube burners, which the technician explains when a replacement set is chosen.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

New York terrace grills are run hard for a short summer and then covered, and a burner that sat damp under that cover all winter can flake at its ports by spring, which is when most burner replacements are booked here.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

In Houston's steady humidity a grill that cooks brisket and fajitas every weekend loses burners to grease and rust together, and the technician checks the heat shields and igniter above each new burner while the grill is open.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland burners suffer more from the months they sit than the weeks they cook: condensation under a cover, salt tracked onto patios and freezing nights, so a spring startup with gaps in the flame line often ends in new burners.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Year-round use in Los Angeles wears burner ports wide and uneven, and dry Santa Ana winds push dust into the air shutters, so every burner replaced here comes with a check of the venturi and of the flame's color.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

On San Diego's coastal patios the marine layer keeps burners damp overnight and salt pits them early, while inland grills lose burners mostly to grease, and each replacement is chosen for the weather that grill actually faces.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area fog settles on grills near the water and rusts their burners from the outside in, and because the region is a seismic zone, a new burner in a built-in head goes in with a look at the flexible gas connector too.

Questions about
the grill burner replacement.

How long do grill burners usually last?
It depends far more on care and weather than on age alone. Stainless and cast burners under a cover and cleaned now and then can run many seasons; burners in salt air, left uncovered or soaked in grease rust out much sooner. Holes along the underside are the sign they are done.
Why do spiders matter so much in a gas grill?
Spiders and small wasps nest in the burner's venturi, the narrow neck behind the knob. A web there blocks the air the gas needs, so the flame turns lazy and yellow, and the gas that cannot move forward can burn backward behind the panel. Clearing the venturi each spring prevents it.
Can I replace all the grill burners if only one is bad?
You can, and on an older grill it often makes sense, since the others wore in the same weather and the grates and shields are already out. The technician shows you the state of each burner so you can decide.
