A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Bull grills,
specifically.

Bull Outdoor Products, in business since 1992, sells its gas grills two ways: as drop-in heads such as the Outlaw, Angus, Brahma, Steer, Lonestar Select and 46-inch Diablo, and as complete carts built around those heads. Many carry an infrared back burner for the rotisserie, and an infrared searing burner can take the place of a standard one. Most Bull repairs come back to the valves, since the ignition is built into them.

Error codesBull grills have plain knobs and publish no error codes or display messages. The warnings Bull itself describes are sounds and flames: a hum or jet noise when a burner lights, flame near the knobs, and a flame stronger at the back of the grill than the front.

What is particular
to Bull.

We service Bull drop-in grill heads and the carts built on them: Outlaw, Angus, Brahma, Steer, Lonestar Select and Diablo. Each head has its own manual, and the model and serial number are usually printed on the drip tray.

The igniter lives inside the valve

Bull's piezo ignition works in two stages: pushing the knob lets gas into the valve, and turning it makes the spark. When Bull burners only light with a match, Bull's own answer is usually new valves, so we test the valve rather than looking for a separate spark box.

An infrared back burner that is only on or off

The rear infrared burner has no low setting, and gas takes longer to reach it, so its knob is held in for several seconds before it sparks. A back burner that will not catch is often just released too soon, which we rule out before replacing anything.

Lights on mains power through a transformer

Interior and control panel lights on Bull heads run on AC power from a transformer, on a GFCI-protected circuit only. Bull asks for the transformer to be mounted at least six inches above the ground, so a flooded or low transformer is a common reason the lights quit.

Hot knobs have two very different causes

Bull traces knobs that get hot to wind blowing in from the back of the grill, or to a hidden fire inside the burners or near the valves. The second is a flashback risk, so hot knobs on a calm day are worth a visit rather than a new set of knobs.

Parts

Bull looks up replacement parts by model or serial number, and because the igniter is part of the valve, many repairs mean a valve. Burners that have bowed are replaced rather than cleaned.

Repair or replace

A Bull head with a sound 304 stainless firebox is nearly always worth repairing, since valves, burners and the back burner are standard parts. Surface rust from sea air or a saltwater pool is a cleaning job first; only a firebox that has rusted through tips the choice toward replacing the head.

Questions about
Bull grills.

Why is the flame on my Bull grill stronger at the back than the front?
Bull says the burners need cleaning; they come out once the cotter pins behind and under the grill are removed. Burners that have bowed should be replaced, and on a brand-new grill running on propane, a natural gas unit may have been shipped by mistake.
Why does my Bull grill hum or sound like a jet when I light it?
Bull's explanation is a small fire burning inside the burner. Turn that burner off and relight it; if the noise keeps coming back, an undersized natural gas line or a restrictive quick-connect fitting can cause it, and the supply should be checked by a plumber.
How do I light the infrared back burner on a Bull?
Push the knob in and hold it for eight to ten seconds before sparking, because gas takes longer to reach a burner at the back. Once lit it runs at one heat; Bull says not to try to regulate it with the knob.
Can my Bull grill switch between propane and natural gas?
Not on its own. Each Bull grill is built for one gas type, and changing it takes Bull's conversion kit, fitted by a plumber.
