A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Broil King grills,
specifically.

Broil King builds its gas grills around Dual-Tube burners under a Flav-R-Wave cooking system, from Baron and Regal carts to Baron Shadow and Imperial island heads, and adds Regal and Crown pellet grills with a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controller. On the gas side a weak flame usually has a known reset; on the pellet side one warning icon stands in for a whole list of codes.

The Broil King lineup

What is particular
to Broil King.

We service Broil King Baron, Regal and Imperial gas grills, including the Pro Infrared models with a 1,700°F infrared side burner, the Baron Shadow IR built-in heads, the Imperial QS with electronic ignition and iQue burner control, and the Regal and Crown pellet grills. Pellet models from 2019 and from 2020 on open from different service panels, which changes how the controller and auger are reached.

A regulator safety that leaves a low flame

Broil King's propane hose and regulator carry a QCC1 safety that cuts flow when it senses a sudden rush of gas, which can happen when the tank is opened with a knob on. The reset is to close everything, disconnect and reconnect the regulator and open the tank slowly; if the low flame keeps returning, a leak test is due.

One warning icon on the pellet controller

Regal and Crown pellet controllers light a single warning icon for an extreme temperature swing. Broil King lists a fire, a flame lost to low pellets, a stalled auger or an electrical failure as possible causes, so the visit starts by ruling each one out.

A pellet grill that turns itself off

The pellet grills shut down if they do not reach 180°F within 30 minutes or stay below 180°F for 30 minutes after the pellets run out. On a very cold day that can look like a failure when the grill is only slow to heat.

Rain in the burn pot

A burn pot soaked by rain can short the hot rod and trip the breaker or GFCI the moment the grill is switched on. Broil King describes a way to start the grill with pre-lit pellets while the hot rod dries, but a hot rod that keeps tripping the outlet needs testing.

Parts

Broil King pellet controllers are replaced as a unit and rewired using the diagram on the back of the controller. Gas parts such as Dual-Tube burners, electrodes and the regulator are ordered by the model and serial number on the grill.

Repair or replace

Igniters, burners, a regulator reset or a pellet controller swap are all worth doing on a Broil King. When a cart grill's cookbox or frame has corroded through, weigh the repair against a new grill.

Questions about
Broil King grills.

Why does my Broil King only give a low flame on propane?
The QCC1 safety in the hose and regulator has probably tripped, often because the tank was opened with a knob on. Close the tank and knobs, disconnect and reconnect the regulator, open the tank slowly and try again; if it keeps happening, book a visit for a leak test.
My Broil King pellet grill switched off in the middle of a cook. Why?
Most often the hopper ran dry and the grill sat below 180°F for 30 minutes, which triggers its safety shutdown. It also shuts off if it cannot reach 180°F within 30 minutes of starting.
Why does my Broil King pellet grill trip the GFCI as soon as I turn it on?
Broil King points to a dedicated circuit first and then to water: a rain-soaked burn pot can short the hot rod. If it keeps tripping once the grill is dry, the hot rod or wiring needs testing.
How do I know if my Broil King igniter just needs a battery?
Press the push button. If it does not click, fit a new battery; if it clicks but there is no spark at the burner, the electrode or its wire is the likely problem.
