A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Viking grills,
specifically.

Viking's current grills are the 5 Series built-in heads from 30 to 54 inches, each with a ProSear infrared burner and a rotisserie; the matching freestanding models on carts still appear on Viking's site but are marked discontinued. Every burner lights from a glowing igniter rather than a spark, so a Viking visit leans on power checks as much as gas checks.

Error codesViking publishes no codes for its 5 Series grills, which have no display. The signal it asks you to read is the igniter: it should glow while the knob is held in, and one that stays dark is inspected with a small mirror beneath its shield.

Book with what the grill is doing and the model plate; the visit starts from the symptom.

What is particular
to Viking.

Current Viking grills are the 5 Series VQGI built-in models in 30-, 36-, 42- and 54-inch widths; the VQGFS freestanding models share the same guide and burners but are listed as discontinued. Burner count and rotisserie burner size change with width, and that decides the parts.

Igniters that glow instead of spark

Viking's lighting steps keep the knob pressed 5 to 7 seconds while the hot-surface igniter warms, and only then turn it to LITE. To inspect one, you lift out the grates and briquette trays and use a small mirror to see the igniter beneath its shield while its knob is pushed in at OFF.

ProSear tiles read by color

The ProSear burner has no air shutter; Viking judges it by its ceramic tiles, which should glow evenly red to orange without lifting or lazy blue flames. A patchy or dim surface points to the burner itself rather than to an adjustment.

A rotisserie burner with a safety valve

The rear burner is guarded by a thermocouple, so its knob has to stay pushed in for 30 to 60 seconds after it lights. Let go early and the valve closes the gas, which looks like a burner that will not stay lit but is the safety doing its job.

The lights double as a power test

Viking's first step for a grill that will not light is to switch on the lights and prove the grill has power, since the hot-surface igniters need it. The grill runs from a 120-volt GFI outlet through a supplied 12-volt transformer, and a tripped outlet is the first thing to reset.

Parts

Viking's brass H burners, the ProSear burner and the hot-surface igniters are specific to the 5 Series, and cart pieces for the discontinued freestanding models can take longer to track down. The model number on the rating plate settles which part fits.

Repair or replace

A 5 Series head with sound brass burners and a solid firebox is worth fixing when an igniter, the ProSear or a valve gives out. On a discontinued freestanding model with a rusted cart and firebox, pricing a new built-in head is a fair comparison.

Questions about
Viking grills.

Why won't my Viking grill spark when I push the knob?
It is not meant to. The 5 Series uses hot-surface igniters that glow while the knob is held in, so keep it pressed for 5 to 7 seconds before turning to LITE. If the igniter stays dark, switch on the grill lights to confirm the grill has power.
Why does the Viking rotisserie burner go out when I let go of the knob?
Its thermocouple and safety valve shut the gas when the knob is released too soon. Keep the knob pressed for 30 to 60 seconds after the burner lights so the thermocouple has time to warm up.
What should the ProSear burner on my Viking grill look like when it is lit?
Viking says the ceramic tiles should be evenly red to orange, with no lifting or lazy blue flames. Small yellow flames from food bits burn off; a dim or patchy surface calls for a visit.
Can a discontinued freestanding Viking grill still be diagnosed?
Yes. The VQGFS freestanding models share one use and care guide with the current built-in heads, so the igniter, burner and valve checks are the same.
