A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Grill Repair

An Artisan visit begins with a cold grill: grates out, heat shields lifted, grease tray pulled so the firebox can be read like a map.

Artisan grills,
specifically.

Artisan is the more affordable grill line sold beside Alfresco on the same maker's site, offered as American Eagle, Artisan and Professional series from 26 to 42 inches, each as a built-in head or on a cart. The Professional adds an infrared rear rotisserie burner, and any of them can take an optional infrared burner in place of a U-burner. Artisan grills cook over U-burners and ceramic briquettes, so a visit looks at the briquette trays as closely as the burners.

Error codesArtisan grills publish no error codes. The manual asks you to listen instead: a rapid snapping when the igniter button is pressed means the spark works, and silence points to the 9-volt battery.

What is particular
to Artisan.

We service Artisan American Eagle (AAEP), Artisan (ART) and Professional (ARTP) grills from 26 to 42 inches, built in or on the matching cart. The Professional's infrared rotisserie burner and the optional infrared burner are lit and preheated differently from the U-burners.

A 9-volt battery behind a separate igniter button

Artisan grills light by pressing an igniter button while pushing and turning the knob, and the spark runs on a 9-volt battery. A working igniter snaps rapidly; silence when the button is pressed sends us to the battery before any wiring.

Ceramic briquettes that clean themselves

Pyramid-shaped ceramic briquettes sit locked in radiant trays above the U-burners. Artisan has you flip the tray and run the burners on high with the lid closed to burn them clean, so greasy briquettes are rarely a reason to replace them.

Two lighting systems on one switch

The grill has incandescent lights over the cooking area and blue LED panel lights under the control panel, both on one switch. When neither comes on, a tripped GFCI or an unplugged cord is far more common than a failed bulb.

The serial number picks the parts list

Artisan splits its parts manuals by serial number, with one list for grills up to 25-133999 and another from 25-134000 on. We read the serial plate first so the igniter switch, burner or tray we bring is the right one.

Parts

Parts are listed in separate manuals for each model and serial range, and the momentary ignition switch, the light switch and the U-burners carry their own part numbers. Serials before and after 25-134000 can need different parts.

Repair or replace

Artisan grills are welded 304 stainless with replaceable burners, briquettes and igniter parts, so repair is the usual answer. A grill that runs cool because of foil linings or a blocked burner needs cleaning, not a new grill.

Questions about
Artisan grills.

My Artisan grill snaps but will not light. What next?
Confirm the gas is on and leak-free, then try lighting one burner with a match as the manual describes. If it lights with a match, the igniter needs adjusting or service; if it will not, the burner is likely blocked, often by spiders or insects.
Are orange tips on my Artisan grill's flame a problem?
A few orange tips are normal in dusty air or when grease is present. A mostly yellow flame together with a gas smell is not: turn every burner off, close the gas supply and book a visit.
How long should the Artisan infrared burner preheat?
At least five minutes with the hood open. The U-burners want at least 15 minutes with the hood closed, or 20 to 25 for high heat.
Can I line my Artisan grill with aluminum foil?
No. Artisan says foil anywhere in the grill disturbs the airflow, leaving the firebox short of heat while the space behind the control panel runs too hot.
