A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

DCS grills,
specifically.

DCS sells its grill heads in two families: Series 9, with lit dials and a charcoal version, and the plainer Series 7. Either can go into an island or onto a DCS cart, and either can carry an infrared sear burner, so the first thing a visit settles is which series and which configuration is on the patio.

The DCS lineup

What is particular
to DCS.

Series 9 (BE1) heads come in 36 and 48 inches with rotisserie, charcoal and infrared sear versions; Series 7 (BH1) heads run from 30 to 48 inches with infrared sear and side-burner versions and a 9-volt battery in the ignition. The series decides the ignition, the lights and the parts a technician brings.

An igniter you will not hear

On a Series 9 head the burner lights after the dial is held in for two seconds and turned to SEAR, and DCS notes that the igniter makes no clicking sound. Silence is normal there; a grill that stays silent and unlit sends the check to the power supply, its fuse and the GFI first.

Dial lights that report gas flow

Series 9 dials glow white when the hood lights are on or another burner is running, and orange when that burner is in use with gas flowing. An orange dial over a burner with no visible flame is the one to act on: turn it off and wait before relighting.

A charcoal version of the same head

The BE1-36C and BE1-48C models take a charcoal insert that sits where a radiant tray would and is lit by the gas burner beneath it. DCS keeps the insert and its grate off the sear burner, which matters when a warped tray or a stubborn flare-up is reported.

Ceramic rods that need turning

DCS radiant trays carry ceramic rods, and the maker's answer to repeated flare-ups is to let the trays cool, turn the rods and burn them clean on high. When flare-ups continue after that, grease on the sear or rotisserie burner is the next place DCS points to.

Parts

Burners, igniters, ceramic rods and sear burners are matched to the series and the model number on the rating plate, so the plate is read before anything is ordered. Charcoal-insert and side-burner versions carry parts of their own.

Repair or replace

A DCS head is a heavy stainless build, so replacing a burner, igniter or sear burner is usually the sensible move. When the firebox itself has rusted through, compare the work against a new head that fits the same cutout.

Questions about
DCS grills.

Why does my DCS Series 9 grill make no clicking sound when I light it?
That is how the Series 9 ignition works: DCS says you will hear the burner light but not the igniter. Hold the dial in for two seconds before turning it to SEAR. If nothing lights, check the GFI and the power supply fuse, and wait five minutes before the next try.
What does an orange light on a DCS grill dial mean?
On Series 9 grills an orange dial means that burner is in use and gas is flowing to it, while white means the lights are on or another burner is running. If a dial is orange and its burner shows no flame, turn it off, keep the hood open and wait five minutes before relighting.
Why does my DCS grill lose heat on a propane tank?
DCS points to the flow limiting device on the cylinder, which can trip when the tank is cold or low and cut the gas flow. Its guide shows how to reset it with every dial off; an empty tank, wind and a short preheat are the other causes it lists.
Can the charcoal insert go anywhere in a DCS grill?
No. The insert replaces a radiant tray and never goes over the sear burner, and when two inserts are used DCS wants a grill burner space left between them for airflow.
