What DUMBO does
to a grill.

The city made DUMBO its 90th historic district in December 2007, covering the industrial blocks between John, York, Main and Bridge Streets.

Freight cars of the Jay Street Connecting Railroad served DUMBO's waterfront buildings from about 1904 until 1957.

Any DUMBO apartment building falls under the FDNY rule that limits propane, terraces included, to a single 16.4-ounce disposable cylinder.

Tower living

Many fire codes and condo rules keep gas and charcoal grills off apartment balconies, so grilling in a tower usually happens at shared amenity-deck grills piped to natural gas, and with so many users their knobs, igniters and grates wear out on a short cycle.

Older housing stock

Older neighborhoods often ran gas to the backyard long after the house was built, and a grill on one of those branches can starve when the pipe is too small for its burners, so low flames there are traced back along the supply.

On the water

Salt from ocean or bay air settles on a grill every day and pits its stainless within a season, so near salt water the hood hinges, burner ports and igniter electrodes are inspected first, and a fresh-water rinse once it cools is the habit that helps most.

When a grill
cannot wait in DUMBO.

In DUMBO as anywhere, these four put the people at the grill in danger and mean the gas stays closed until we come: a gas smell at the grill, the hose or the tank, a grease fire that keeps burning with the knobs down, flame curling out behind the control panel, or a knob that turns to off while the burner stays lit.
