A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

TEC grills,
specifically.

TEC, the Thermal Engineering Corporation of Columbia, South Carolina, makes only infrared gas grills: the Patio FR and Sterling Patio FR in built-in, pedestal and cabinet form, and the G-Sport FR. Its burners fire under radiant glass panels rather than open grates, so a TEC visit follows its own checklist rather than the one we use on tube-burner grills.

Error codesTEC grills have push-button igniters and knobs and no electronic display, so there are no codes to read. What TEC's own troubleshooting relies on is sound and heat: a burner that pops or sounds like a motor boat, and a grill that stays cool after a tank change.

What is particular
to TEC.

We work on the current Patio FR, Sterling Patio FR and G-Sport FR, and on older TECs such as the Patio I and II, Sterling II and Cherokee. The serial number begins with the model abbreviation and its location differs by model, which TEC lists on its support page.

Glass panels over the burners

TEC says never to grill without the radiant glass panels in place, because they keep drippings off the burners. The panels take up to 1,200°F, but ash left on them can overheat and crack them, so TEC's burn-off and scrape routine matters.

Two generations of burner

Older TECs used ceramic burners, and a cracked ceramic makes a popping or motor-boat noise and loses heat. The newer burners do not fit those older grills, while FR-series burners are replaced once their perforated top has worn through.

A limit on high heat with the hood down

TEC's manual warns against running on high with the hood closed for more than 10 minutes, to keep the grill under 1,000°F. A long preheat or a slow cook is better done with the hood open or the burners turned down.

Lighting by match through a viewport

Each TEC burner has a viewport beside its knob, and a match holder reaches the burner through it when the spark igniter fails. TEC asks for a five-minute wait before any relight, so gas left in the grill can clear.

Parts

TEC sells its own parts and requires TEC-specified regulators preset to the grill's gas pressure. Grills with the original ceramic burners cannot take the new-style burners, so parts for those models are a separate question.

Repair or replace

A cracked glass panel, an igniter or a worn FR burner is an ordinary repair on a TEC's stainless body. On an old ceramic-burner TEC whose burners have failed, the fact that new burners will not fit makes replacement a fair comparison.

Questions about
TEC grills.

Why won't my TEC get hot after I changed the propane tank?
TEC says this usually means the excess flow valve in the tank valve has tripped. Turn every knob off before opening the tank; if the grill still runs cool, the orifice or the regulator is next.
My TEC burner makes a motor-boat sound. Is it failing?
On a TEC with the original ceramic burner, that sound usually means the ceramic has cracked and the burner needs replacing. On FR models, TEC first has the twelve bolts around the burner head checked for tightness.
Should I take the glass panels out to clean my TEC?
TEC recommends leaving them in. Run a 10-minute burn-off on high, let the grill cool, then scrape the ash to the back so it drops into the drip tray.
Why is there frost on my TEC's regulator?
TEC says frost is typically a sign the propane tank was overfilled. Turn the tank off right away and contact your gas supplier.
