A large stainless built-in gas grill head set into a stone island on a sunny patio, its hood raised to show three burners glowing with even blue flame under clean stainless grates, the knob panel below with knobs, the access doors under the grill closed, plants softly blurred behind, daylight, seasonless.

Hestan grills,
specifically.

Hestan grills are built around the Trellis burner with ceramic briquette radiant trays above it, alongside infrared sear and rotisserie burners, in 30-, 36- and 42-inch built-in heads or on Hestan carts. Hestan also sells a second grill family under the Aspire name. The main burners rely on hot-surface ignition, so the electrical box matters as much as the gas side.

Error codesHestan grills have no display and no published codes. The manual asks you to read the igniter glow and the infrared burners, which should shine evenly red on HIGH.

What is particular
to Hestan.

Hestan's line is the GABR, GMBR and GSBR built-in heads in 30, 36 and 42 inches, the same heads on double-door or drawer-and-door carts, and deluxe versions on larger carts with side burners; Aspire grills are a separate family. The model letters and the width decide which burners and igniters a visit needs.

Model letters tell you the burners

In a Hestan model number, GABR means all Trellis burners, GSBR all sear burners and GMBR a mix of the two. Before arriving, the technician knows from that alone whether the job involves radiant trays, ceramic infrared burners or both.

A glow that lasts longer

Hestan's main-burner igniters have a time-extender that keeps them hot longer so the burner catches; the rotisserie does not have it. The lighting routine is to push the knob for five seconds, then turn to HIGH.

Infrared burners judged by their glow

On HIGH an infrared burner should glow red evenly across its face; Hestan reads a weak glow or a wide blue halo of flame as blocked airflow and a service call. In bright sun a lit infrared burner can be hard to see, so the manual suggests feeling for heat from 8 to 10 inches away before relighting.

Radiant trays belong only over Trellis burners

The briquette trays work with the Trellis burners and must never sit over a sear burner. A grill converted between burner types with Hestan's kits has its trays checked against the new layout.

Parts

Trellis burners, sear burners, igniters and radiant trays are ordered by model letters and width, and Hestan sells kits to convert between sear and Trellis burners. A fuse on the electrical box feeds the control panel LEDs, a small part that is easy to overlook.

Repair or replace

A Hestan head is a heavy stainless piece with specialized burners, so replacing an igniter, a burner or a regulator is nearly always the better choice. Replacement makes sense mainly when the firebox or cart has corroded past saving.

Questions about
Hestan grills.

Why are the LED lights on my Hestan grill control panel off?
Hestan lists two reasons: no power at the receptacle, or a blown fuse on the electrical box. Check the cord and the GFCI outlet first; if they are fine, the fuse is next.
Why does my Hestan rotisserie burner go out?
Hestan's steps keep the knob pressed for at least 30 seconds once the rotisserie burner catches. Wind and an igniter that no longer glows are the other causes its guide lists.
How can I tell if my Hestan sear burner is working right?
On HIGH it should glow red evenly over its whole face. Hestan treats a dim glow or a large blue halo as a blockage or airflow problem that needs service.
What causes a lazy yellow flame on a Hestan grill?
Hestan points first to dirty ports and spider webs, then to the air and gas mixture, the regulator and an orifice sized for the wrong gas. Cleaning the ports is the owner's part; the rest is for the visit.
