Grill repair in Palo Alto.

Palo Alto's warm, dry summers make for long grilling seasons, and beside Eichler glass walls a pellet grill or a built-in head is placed so smoke drifts away from the house, with fallen litter swept from beneath it before red-flag days.

What Palo Alto does
to a grill.

Palo Alto's Foothills Park has six day-use picnic areas, and the busiest, Orchard Glen, holds 56 picnic tables and 28 barbecues.

In October 2020 city open space staff recommended removing nine hillside barbecue pits at Pine Gulch, Encinal, Shady Cove and Lakeside to make the park safer from wildfire.

Staff had seen those hillside sites used only a few times a year, on the busiest days such as the Fourth of July.

Foothills Park came into the city with the mostly undeveloped land west of Foothill Expressway annexed between 1959 and 1968.

Premium built-in grill heads

A built-in grill in a custom counter sits in a tight cutout, with an insulated jacket where the maker calls for one, and lifting the head out for valve or manifold work is planned so the stone around it is protected.

Newer developments

Newer planned communities often run a natural gas stub to the patio, and a propane grill moved onto that stub needs a conversion kit with the correct orifices, fitted by a technician, or its flames burn tall and yellow.

Family houses

Family yards often put the grill near a play area, so the hood handle, the side shelves and knobs a child could turn get a second look, and closing the tank valve at the end of each cook is the simplest safeguard.

When a grill
cannot wait in Palo Alto.

In Palo Alto as anywhere, these four put the people at the grill in danger and mean the gas stays closed until we come: a gas smell at the grill, the hose or the tank, a grease fire that keeps burning with the knobs down, flame curling out behind the control panel, or a knob that turns to off while the burner stays lit.
