What La Jolla does
to a grill.

Where the city sets out fire pits in summer they are first-come, first-served, and no beach fire may burn between midnight and 5 a.m.

Only wood, charcoal or paper may be burned, stacked no higher than 12 inches above the container's rim, and the coals must be carried off or left in hot coal containers.

San Diego Fire-Rescue policy keeps portable outdoor fireplaces such as chimineas at least 15 feet from any structure or combustible material.

On the water

A grill by salt water shows rust first where nobody looks: beneath the firebox, on the underside of each burner and on the heat shields, and a flame that suddenly runs uneven is usually salt eating through thin metal.

Premium built-in grill heads

Designed grilling areas often mix makes, a grill head from one maker and a smoker from another, and parts are ordered from each model plate rather than judged by eye, since many premium heads look alike and take different burners.

Seasonal houses

At a seasonal house the grill may go untouched for months at a stretch, long enough for spiders and wasps to fill its burner tubes and for mice to nest under the grease tray, so they are cleared before the first flame of the year.

When a grill
cannot wait in La Jolla.

In La Jolla as anywhere, these four put the people at the grill in danger and mean the gas stays closed until we come: a gas smell at the grill, the hose or the tank, a grease fire that keeps burning with the knobs down, flame curling out behind the control panel, or a knob that turns to off while the burner stays lit.
