What it
usually means.

Many premium grill heads carry lights: colored LEDs behind each knob, halogen or LED lamps under the hood for cooking after dark, and sometimes a lit display. Most run on low voltage from a transformer plugged into an outlet in the island or on the cart, and some from batteries in a compartment under the panel. Outdoors, the enemy is water. A cover that holds damp against the panel, rain driven sideways, or a hose aimed at the knobs lets moisture into sockets and plugs, where it corrodes contacts until they fail one by one. Heat is the other enemy: hood lamps sit right above the burners, so halogen bulbs and their glass lenses crack or fog after hot cooks, and wires routed near the firebox can bake. The first check is always the power: a GFCI outlet tripped by rain, a switch left off, a transformer unplugged, or batteries run flat. If every light went dark at once, the power is the likely answer; if one is dark while the rest shine, look to its bulb, socket or wire.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt fits a new lamp into the hood light of an open stainless built-in grill on a covered patio at dusk, soft warm light from a second hood lamp falling on clean empty grates, the grill cold with no flame, daylight fading, seasonless. The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Are all the lights dark, or only one knob or one hood lamp?

02

Is there power at the outlet the grill plugs into, and is its GFCI tripped?

03

Do the lights run from a transformer, batteries or the grill's own switch?

04

Did they fail after rain, a hose-down or a humid spell under the cover?

05

Is a hood lens cracked or fogged on the inside?

Grill lights not working: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Check the outlet the grill plugs into and reset its GFCI once, only if the outlet and your hands are dry.

02

Make sure the light switch is on and the transformer is plugged in, or fit fresh batteries.

03

Note whether all the lights are out or only one.

Also worth checking

  • Let the grill dry out fully with the cover off on a sunny day, then try again.
  • A GFCI that snaps off again at once stays off; repeated resets only hide the wet connection behind it.

How soon does it need a visit?

Dark lights are never urgent. A GFCI that refuses to hold while the outlet is wet is left off until the visit.

6 things grill lights not working: dark knob lights and hood lamps turns out to be, from switch off, transformer unplugged or batteries flat to transformer or light board failed.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Switch off, transformer unplugged or batteries flat

The simplest answers come first: the light switch, the transformer plug and fresh batteries where the grill uses them.

  2. 02 lowest

    GFCI outlet tripped by rain

Water in an outlet cover trips the GFCI and every light goes out at once. If it will not reset or trips again, the circuit is checked.

  3. 03 low

Hood lamp or lens burned out or cracked

Heat from the burners shortens bulb life and cracks the glass. Both are replaced with parts rated for the heat.

  4. 04 low

    Wire baked near the firebox

A light wire routed too close to the heat hardens and breaks inside its insulation. The run is replaced and rerouted.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Moisture corroding sockets and plugs

Green or white crust on the contacts cuts the circuit, often one light at a time. Corroded sockets and connectors are replaced and sealed.

  6. 06 moderate

    Transformer or light board failed

When every light is dark with power present at the outlet, the transformer or the board behind the panel is tested and replaced.

Questions about
grill lights not working: dark knob lights and hood lamps.

Why do the grill knob lights come back once the weather dries?
Moisture in a plug or socket is shorting the circuit, and it recovers as it dries. The contacts keep corroding in the meantime, so it usually gets worse.
Can grill hood lamp bulbs be changed at home?
On many grills, yes, cold and unplugged, following the manual. A cracked lens should be replaced too, or grease and steam will reach the new bulb.
Does the grill need power to cook if the lights fail?
Usually not; on most gas grills the lights are separate. On heads with mains-powered ignition, though, no power means no spark either.
Should the grill cover go on right after cooking?
Wait until the grill is cool and dry. A cover over a warm, damp grill traps steam around the lights and the knobs.
