What E3
actually means.

A pellet grill keeps a small fire going in the burn pot and relights it with the glow plug if it drops out. E3 appears when those relight attempts fail, most often because ash has choked the burn pot, the pellets are poor or damp, or the auger stopped delivering fuel.

What to do when E3 shows on the grill

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Weber's own guidance for E3 on its grills. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Keep the lid closed and wait for the shutdown cycle and a full cool-down before touching anything inside.

02

When the grill is cold, scrape the burn pot and cookbox so ash drops into the ash and grease system, and empty the grease tray.

03

Test the pellets: Weber's rule is that a fresh pellet snaps cleanly and does not crumble to dust.

04

If E3 comes back with a clean burn pot and fresh pellets, book a visit so the auger feed and glow plug can be checked.

What not to do

E3 is the shutdown version of a lost flame; E19 is the milder notification the Searwood shows while it is still trying to relight. It is not an overheating signal, which is E5.

Questions
about E3.

Can I clear E3 myself?
Keep the lid closed and wait for the shutdown cycle and a full cool-down before touching anything inside. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
What is the difference between E3 and E19 on my Weber Searwood?
E19 is a notification that the flame went out and the glow plug is trying to relight it, and you can keep cooking. E3 means those attempts failed and the grill has shut down.
Why does my Weber get E3 on long overnight smokes?
Low and slow cooks leave the most ash in the burn pot and can run the hopper low. Either one can starve the fire late in the cook.
Should I clean the burn pot as soon as E3 appears?
Only once the grill has finished its shutdown and is completely cold. Weber warns to let ash and debris fully burn out first.

Still showing E3?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code copied exactly, the model and serial from the rating label, and a word on whether the grill still lights, heats or feeds pellets. With those three the office can match the likely part to your grill the same day.
