The lid of a pellet grill's hopper raised on a sunny patio, a low layer of wood pellets inside the grill's hopper with the auger opening at the bottom just visible, nobody near it.

Weber E1: the pellet auger has jammed

The controller has sensed that the auger cannot turn freely, most often because swollen pellets, sawdust or a foreign object have packed the auger tube.

What E1
actually means.

The controller has sensed that the auger cannot turn freely, most often because swollen pellets, sawdust or a foreign object have packed the auger tube. E1 is one of the codes that cannot be dismissed, so the grill runs its shutdown and will not cook again until the jam is cleared.

What to do when E1 shows on the grill

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Weber's own guidance for E1 on its grills. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Keep the lid closed and let the shutdown cycle finish; do not pull the plug while the fan is still running.

02

Once the grill is completely cold and unplugged, empty the hopper through the pellet release handle into a bucket.

03

Look at the pellets you drained: soft, crumbly or damp pellets are the usual cause, so throw them out rather than reload them.

04

If E1 returns on the next cook, book a visit so the auger and motor can be pulled, the tube cleaned and the shear pin checked.

What not to do

E1 is a jam, not a dead motor; a motor that does not respond at all shows E7. It is also not a sign the hopper is empty, which the grill reports as a low fuel notification on models with a fuel gauge.

Questions
about E1.

Can I clear E1 myself?
Keep the lid closed and let the shutdown cycle finish; do not pull the plug while the fan is still running. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does my Weber Searwood keep showing E1 after I refill the hopper?
If the pellets that jammed are still in the auger tube, fresh pellets on top will not help. The tube has to be emptied and the auger checked, and damp pellets sitting in the hopper are often the root cause.
What is the shear pin Weber mentions for E1?
It is the small pin that joins the auger to its motor, meant to break before the motor is damaged by a hard jam. If the auger pulls away from the motor, the pin has sheared and must be replaced before the grill can feed again.
Can I clear a Weber E1 by just turning the grill off and on?
No. E1 is a non-dismissible code, so the grill shuts down and the jam stays until the auger tube is physically cleared.

Back to your everyday

Still showing E1?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code copied exactly, the model and serial from the rating label, and a word on whether the grill still lights, heats or feeds pellets. With those three the office can match the likely part to your grill the same day.
