What E5
actually means.

The controller compares the cookbox reading with the set temperature and stops feeding pellets when heat runs away. On a pellet grill the usual cause is grease and ash that have caught fire in the cookbox or grease tray, which is why Weber's fix starts with cleaning.

What to do when E5 shows on the grill

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Weber's own guidance for E5 on its grills. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Keep the lid closed so the fire starves of air, and let the shutdown cycle run; never use water on a grease fire.

02

If flames keep growing or spread beyond the grill, move away and call 911.

03

When the grill is completely cold, clean the burn pot, cookbox and grease tray and replace the drip pan.

04

Look the grill over for heat damage, and book a visit if E5 comes back on a clean grill.

Questions
about E5.

Can I clear E5 myself?
Keep the lid closed so the fire starves of air, and let the shutdown cycle run; never use water on a grease fire. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why did my Weber Searwood show E5 during a high-heat sear?
Grease left from earlier low-temperature cooks can ignite once the grill climbs to searing heat. Weber suggests extra cleaning after low and slow cooks before a hot one for that reason.
Should I open the lid when my Weber shows E5?
Weber's instruction for E5 is to keep the lid closed during the shutdown. Opening it feeds air to any fire burning inside.
Is my Weber safe to use again after an E5?
Clean it fully and inspect it for warped or scorched parts first. If the code returns on a clean grill, have the temperature sensor and controller checked before cooking again.

Still showing E5?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code copied exactly, the model and serial from the rating label, and a word on whether the grill still lights, heats or feeds pellets. With those three the office can match the likely part to your grill the same day.
