What RES
actually means.

Broil King uses a factory reset to clear firmware updates that may be making a pellet grill misbehave. Holding the power button and then the gear button for three seconds makes the controller beep and flash RES; repeating the hold soon after completes the reset, and the controller then restarts on its original settings.

What to do when RES shows on the grill

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Broil King's own guidance for RES on its grills. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

If you did not mean to reset, wait without pressing anything; the reset only completes when the button hold is repeated within about 20 seconds.

02

If you did finish the reset, let the controller restart, then reconnect the Broil King app and install the firmware update from the grill settings page.

03

Check that the grill starts and heats normally afterwards, and book a visit if the problem you were resetting for is still there.

Cleared?

The code is gone from the controller, the grill climbs to its set heat and holds it through a full cook, the pellets keep dropping and the probe readings stay believable, all without a new part. If the same code comes back within a week, or after the next rain, mention it when you book.

What not to do

RES is not a code for a broken part; it only appears during a reset someone started from the buttons. Broil King also warns that a reset cannot be undone and applies only to certain 2021 and later Regal and Crown serial numbers.

No repair indicated

Nothing to repair.

Nothing on the grill has failed; the controller is showing a state it was put in on purpose. A shutdown cycle keeps the fan running to burn off the last pellets before the grill goes quiet, a keep-warm setting holds the cook box low, a demo mode lights the display without feeding fuel, and a pairing screen waits for a phone to connect. No part is needed; the button sequence in the manual, or simply letting the cycle finish, returns it to normal.

In Broil King's own words

Your pellet grill will then BEEP and flash RES (“reset”) on the screen of your controller.

Questions
about RES.

Can I clear RES myself?
If you did not mean to reset, wait without pressing anything; the reset only completes when the button hold is repeated within about 20 seconds.
Why is RES flashing on my Broil King pellet grill?
The power and gear buttons were held together long enough to start a factory reset. Unless the hold is repeated within about 20 seconds, the reset does not go through.
Will a factory reset fix my Broil King pellet grill?
It can help when a firmware update is behind the problem. It will not fix a jammed auger, a failed hot rod or a bad fan, which need parts.
Can every Broil King pellet grill show RES?
No. Broil King limits the factory reset to 2021 Regal and Crown models in certain serial number ranges.

Back to your everyday

Still showing RES?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code copied exactly, the model and serial from the rating label, and a word on whether the grill still lights, heats or feeds pellets. With those three the office can match the likely part to your grill the same day.
