What OH
actually means.

The touch-panel thermometer has its own circuit board behind the control panel. Fire Magic names two ways it gets too hot: wind blowing into the back of the lid and pushing heat forward, or a grease fire in the firebox. The board stops reading until it cools.

What to do when OH shows on the grill

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Fire Magic's own guidance for OH on its grills. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

If there are flames in the grease tray or under the hood, treat it as a grease fire: gas off at the tank or shutoff, knobs off, lid closed if you can do it safely, never water, and 911 if it spreads.

02

With no fire, turn the burners off, open the hood and let the grill cool before switching the thermometer back on.

03

If OH returns on a calm day with a clean firebox, book a visit so the board and the panel area can be checked for heat damage.

Still there?

It usually turns into grill lights and electronics repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

OH is not a reading of the cooking temperature, even though it shows in the oven window. It also does not mean the burners have been shut off, because the thermometer does not control them.

Where OH usually leads

Grill lights and electronics repair.

Hood lights, knob lights, transformer, power supply, switches and harness · low to moderate.

Echelon Diamond gas grills with the touch-panel digital thermometer (E660i, E790i, E1060i and their portable s versions). The EL500i electric grill shows the same reading on its own display; Aurora and Choice grills with a dial thermometer show nothing.

Questions
about OH.

Can I clear OH myself?
If there are flames in the grease tray or under the hood, treat it as a grease fire: gas off at the tank or shutoff, knobs off, lid closed if you can do it safely, never water, and 911 if it spreads. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does my Fire Magic Echelon show OH only when it is windy?
Wind entering the back of the lid pushes hot air toward the front, where the thermometer board sits. Fire Magic recommends a wind deflector for grills that face the wind.
Do the burners turn off when a Fire Magic shows OH?
No. Fire Magic states the digital thermometer does not control the burners, so they keep burning until you turn the knobs off.
Can a Fire Magic keep working after an OH reading?
Once it cools and turns back on, the thermometer usually reads again. If it will not, or the panel shows scorch marks, the board or wiring needs replacing.

Back to your everyday

Still showing OH?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code copied exactly, the model and serial from the rating label, and a word on whether the grill still lights, heats or feeds pellets. With those three the office can match the likely part to your grill the same day.
