The inside wall of an open pellet grill on a patio, a thin steel temperature sensor mounted near the grill's cooking grate, a meat probe lead resting on the side shelf beside it.

Weber E8: the cookbox temperature sensor is not reading

The thermocouple inside the cookbox tells the controller how hot the grill is, and the controller feeds pellets based on that reading.

What E8
actually means.

The thermocouple inside the cookbox tells the controller how hot the grill is, and the controller feeds pellets based on that reading. With E8 the reading is missing or impossible, so the grill cannot hold temperature and shuts down.

What to do when E8 shows on the grill

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Weber's own guidance for E8 on its grills. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Let the grill shut down and cool fully, then unplug it.

02

Open the lid and make sure nothing, such as foil or a pan, is pressed against the temperature sensor inside the cookbox.

03

Start a cook to let the controller retest the sensor.

04

If E8 remains, book a visit to check the sensor connection at the board and replace the thermocouple.

What not to do

E8 is the grill's own cookbox sensor, not the meat probes you plug in, which report through the probe hub as E17. A reading that is simply lower than the set point is E18.

Questions
about E8.

Can I clear E8 myself?
Let the grill shut down and cool fully, then unplug it. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Is E8 on my Weber about my meat probe?
No. E8 is the fixed sensor inside the cookbox. Meat probe and probe hub trouble is E17.
Can grease on the sensor cause E8 on a Weber pellet grill?
Buildup can throw off a reading, but E8 usually means a broken connection or a failed sensor. Cleaning is worth doing, and a repeat code needs the part checked.
Why can't my Weber cook at all with E8?
Without a cookbox reading the controller has no way to decide how many pellets to feed, so it shuts down for safety.

Still showing E8?

A booking with a code goes further when it has the code copied exactly, the model and serial from the rating label, and a word on whether the grill still lights, heats or feeds pellets. With those three the office can match the likely part to your grill the same day.
