What Los Angeles County does
to a grill.
Where grills sit in Los Angeles County: premium built-in grill heads, pool decks and cookouts, gated communities.
All of Los AngelesPremium built-in grill heads
A built-in grill in a custom counter sits in a tight cutout, with an insulated jacket where the maker calls for one, and lifting the head out for valve or manifold work is planned so the stone around it is protected.
Pool decks and cookouts
A grill built into a counter relies on vents below it to let heat and any stray gas escape, and on these patios a grill whose knobs or control panel run hot is checked for blocked vents as well as for a problem in the grill itself.
Gated communities
Associations in gated communities may set where a grill and its propane tank can stand and how far from the house, and a technician moving a grill or running a new gas line works inside those rules, with the visit arranged through the gate.
Where we go
in Los Angeles County.
94 cities and neighborhoods across Los Angeles County, part of Los Angeles, 14 of them with a page on what that place does to a grill. The same visit in each.
Bel Air
Set entirely within the Santa Monica Mountains, Bel Air faces the main UCLA campus across Sunset Boulevard, with the Bel-Air Country Club and the Hotel Bel-Air at its heart.
Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills entertaining often centers on a long built-in grill with an infrared sear zone and a rotisserie, cooked on by a private chef or a caterer, who usually spots a burner running cool or a back burner gone out before the owner does.
Brentwood
Brentwood's canyon edges sit beside dry brush that can catch in fire season, so grills there stand well away from dry plantings with their grease trays kept empty, and on red-flag days many owners leave the pellet grill cold altogether.
Calabasas
Wild Walnut Park, a preserve on Mulholland Highway, has walking paths and picnic benches, and part of it was approved as a dog park in 2020.
Hancock Park
Hancock Park's homeowners group, formed in 1948, has pressed the Los Angeles Times to redraw the neighborhood's mapped boundaries.
Holmby Hills
Holmby Park, one of the neighborhood's two parks, holds two playgrounds, the nine-hole Armand Hammer putting green and lawn bowling greens used by a club formed in 1927.
Malibu
Malibu grills stand between ocean salt and wildfire country, so their burners and hood hinges pit quickly, and at seasonal homes here a grill that sat through a damp spell often needs its igniter and venturi tubes cleared before the first cook back.
Manhattan Beach
At Manhattan Beach city parks and facilities, outdoor grilling and cooking are allowed only on the city's own stationary barbecues.
Pacific Palisades
Across the Pacific Palisades, new houses going up since the January 2025 fire often include built-in grills whose first seasons raise questions about igniters, fuel conversions and settings, while grills in the lower Palisades fight ocean salt on their stainless.
Palos Verdes Estates
The Los Angeles County Fire Department covers Palos Verdes Estates from engine company firehouses inside the city limits.
Pasadena
Pasadena's Craftsman yards gained their grills long after the houses were built, often a propane cart or a head on a branch of an old gas line, and hot inland summers bake knobs and hoses, so those are the first parts checked on a visit here.
San Marino
A picnic area in Lacy Park often hosts concerts, civic events and pancake breakfasts.
Santa Monica
Santa Monica's municipal code treats making or using a fire or barbecue, or burning charcoal, in its parks and on its beach as a fire hazard, unless it happens in a grill the city installed.
Studio City
The Studio City Recreation Center, known as Beeman Park, on Rye Street at Beeman Avenue, has barbecue pits, picnic tables and a running track.
