What Manhattan does
to a grill.
Where grills sit in Manhattan: tower living, older housing stock, balconies and small yards.
All of New York MetroTower living
Many fire codes and condo rules keep gas and charcoal grills off apartment balconies, so grilling in a tower usually happens at shared amenity-deck grills piped to natural gas, and with so many users their knobs, igniters and grates wear out on a short cycle.
Older housing stock
Older neighborhoods often ran gas to the backyard long after the house was built, and a grill on one of those branches can starve when the pipe is too small for its burners, so low flames there are traced back along the supply.
Balconies and small yards
A small grill cooking for a whole household burns through its grates and burners sooner than a big one used lightly, and where storage is short it stays outside all year under a cover that holds damp against the steel.

Battery Park City
Battery Park City covers 92 acres of state-owned land on the Hudson waterfront, and 36 of those acres are parkland.
Greenwich Village
Row houses from the 1800s, mid-rise apartment buildings and a few single-family walk-ups keep the Village skyline low beside the towers of Midtown and Downtown.
SoHo
The Landmarks Preservation Commission protected SoHo's cast-iron blocks in 1973 and widened that district in 2010, so nearly the whole neighborhood now sits inside it.
Tribeca
Tribeca's converted lofts and newer towers have roof decks where grills face strong wind and full sun, and a burner that keeps blowing out up there points to a missing wind guard or a weak gas supply rather than a failed igniter.
Upper East Side
On the Upper East Side grills live on a few private terraces and townhouse gardens, and fire rules keep propane off most apartment terraces, so a grill here is usually piped to natural gas or electric and reached through the building's staff.
Upper West Side
Bounded by Central Park, the Hudson River, 59th Street and 110th Street, the Upper West Side runs along Riverside Park, built from the 1870s to an Olmsted design.
