An infrared grill still burns gas, but it turns most of that flame into radiant heat before it reaches the food. The oldest design uses a ceramic tile drilled with thousands of tiny holes: the gas burns on its face, the ceramic glows orange, and the heat arrives as light rather than hot air. Newer designs burn the gas under a stainless mesh screen, a ribbed emitter plate, or a sheet of radiant glass that the flame heats from below. Some grills cook entirely this way, and many premium heads mix it in as a single sear station beside their blue-flame burners, or as a back burner behind the rotisserie spit. Infrared burners reach searing heat in a few minutes and dry out drippings before they can flare, but they are unforgiving of what lands on them: a greasy ceramic cracks, a clogged mesh starves itself of air, and water on a hot tile can split it. They also light and run at a different rate from the burners beside them, so a grill that has both needs each side set and judged on its own terms. What fails on an infrared grill How to tell 01 Under the grate you see a flat plate that glows orange across its whole face instead of a row of small blue flames along a tube. 02 The glowing surface is honeycombed ceramic, a fine stainless mesh, or a smooth sheet of glass or ribbed metal set over a burner. 03 One zone is marked as a sear station, often narrower than the others, and gets far hotter within a few minutes of lighting. 04 On other grills the only infrared part is a burner on the back wall under the hood that glows behind the rotisserie spit. On an infrared grill: cracked or plugged ceramic tiles, mesh and emitter screens clogged with ash, ignition set further from the gas, valve, orifice and burner box. The problems it shows ### Cracked or plugged ceramic tiles Rain on a hot tile, a cold marinade dripped onto it, or a hard knock from a grate crack the ceramic. Grease left to bake in the holes blocks them in patches, and the tile then burns unevenly with dark spots, blue flame lifting at the edges or a flame that pops back into the burner. ### Mesh and emitter screens clogged with ash On mesh burners the fine screen fills with carbon and ash from above. The burner can no longer breathe, the glow turns patchy, the flame may lift off with a roar, and the orange zone never reaches the heat the maker describes. ### Ignition set further from the gas An infrared burner often lights through a pilot or a spark placed at one corner, and the flame must travel across its face. When that corner is fouled or the electrode has moved, the burner lights late with a soft thump, or only after gas has built up in the box. ### Valve, orifice and burner box The infrared burner has its own valve and orifice, sized for its own gas rate. A converted grill with the wrong orifice in that position, or a rusted burner box letting air in around the tile, gives a flame that stays yellow or will not hold its glow. ## Getting at it, and whether to. Let the grill cool fully before the visit; infrared plates hold heat long after the knobs are turned off. [What repairs cost](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/cost/) On the visit 1. Please do not scrub or wash the infrared tiles or screens beforehand, since how they are fouled is part of what tells the technician the cause. 2. If a burner lights with a loud bang or you see flame coming out near the knobs, close the gas at the tank or shutoff and leave it closed until we arrive. 3. Tell us which zone glows, what it does wrong, and whether the grill has ever been switched from one gas to the other. Repair or replace An infrared burner is almost always replaced rather than patched, and it is usually worth it: the rest of the grill is sound, and the burner is a part the makers expect to supply. Where the grill uses its maker's own emitter or glass that is no longer made, or where the firebox around the burner has rusted, the technician prices a compatible part or the larger job and lays out the choice. Gas is gathering before the flame reaches it, because the igniter sits at one corner and something delays the spark or the flame's travel: a fouled tile edge, a moved electrode, or a clogged mesh. Stop using that burner and have it checked, since a delayed light can also push flame back toward the valve. ### Can I clean the ceramic tiles on an infrared grill myself? The usual care is to burn them off on high for a few minutes after cooking and brush the grate, not the tile. Never pour water on a hot tile or scrape the holes with metal. A tile that is cracked, patchy after a burn-off, or losing chips needs replacing, not cleaning. ### Does an infrared grill need a different gas setup from other gas grills? It runs on the same propane or natural gas, but each infrared burner has an orifice sized for its own rate, and a conversion must change those as well as the blue-flame burners.
