Knobs off, tank shut, lid up, step back A burner that cannot be shut at its knob means gas flows whenever the source is open. Close the tank or the shutoff, leave it closed, and book a visit; the grill is not used until the valve is replaced. ## What it usually means. Each knob turns a small gas valve, a brass or aluminum body with a tapered plug or a stem and seal that opens and closes the flow to one burner. The knob presses onto the valve's flat stem, and on most grills it must be pushed in before it turns so that a bump cannot open it. When the knob wears its grip on the stem, it spins freely while the valve stays where it was. When the valve itself sticks, from grease and carbon, from heat after a flare-up or from corrosion in salt air, the knob stops at off but the plug inside has not closed, and the burner keeps a low flame. A knob cracked by a flashback or softened by a grease fire can slip the same way. The danger is plain: this burner can no longer be shut down with its own control, and gas keeps flowing after the cook is over. Close the gas at the tank valve or the shutoff, let the flame die, and keep that source closed until the valve has been replaced. Do not force the knob with pliers or pull the valve out; a valve is changed only by someone who leak-tests the manifold afterward.
