Grills light in a few different ways. The simplest is a piezo button that snaps a spring-loaded crystal and sends a single spark down a wire to an electrode beside the burner. Most current cart grills use a battery spark module: an AA or AAA cell behind a cap on the panel drives rapid clicking to one or several electrodes. Many built-in heads from the premium makes run a 120-volt module powered from an outlet in the island, and some use a hot-surface igniter that glows instead of sparking. Every electrode needs a clean ceramic body and the small gap its maker specifies to the burner or a collector box; too wide and the spark never jumps, cracked and it leaks to the metal behind. Water is the main enemy. A cover that holds damp against the panel, a hose-down during cleaning, or salt air near the coast corrodes the battery clip and the wire ends. Grease caked on an electrode tip smothers the spark. If the module clicks but no spark shows at the burner, look to the wire or the electrode; if nothing clicks at all, start with the battery or the power.
