### On the water

Before a hurricane or a coastal storm, a grill by salt water has its tank closed and taken off or its gas shut off, and it is strapped down or moved inside, since wind can throw a cart grill; afterward it stays unlit until checked.

### Premium built-in grill heads

A built-in grill in a custom counter sits in a tight cutout, with an insulated jacket where the maker calls for one, and lifting the head out for valve or manifold work is planned so the stone around it is protected.

### Seasonal houses

At a seasonal house the grill may go untouched for months at a stretch, long enough for spiders and wasps to fill its burner tubes and for mice to nest under the grease tray, so they are cleared before the first flame of the year.

### La Jolla

La Jolla's beaches follow the city of San Diego's rules, which prohibit open beach fires outside a container on every city beach.

### Point Loma

At Cabrillo National Monument on the tip of Point Loma, spring usually brings cool, windy and foggy weather even when it is hot and dry inland.

### Rancho Santa Fe

In 1906 the Santa Fe Railway bought the whole land grant to plant 3.5 million blue gum eucalyptus for railroad ties, but the wood proved too soft to hold spikes.

### Solana Beach

Fletcher Cove, the town's beach access, was carved out with a fire hose: one man spent three months washing away earth with water spilling from the Lake Hodges Dam.
