Since July 3, 2025, only propane-fueled fire devices are allowed on Coronado's South Beach, the stretch from the Naval Amphibious Base to the jetty in front of the Hotel del Coronado, to cut smoke for nearby residents. ## What Coronado does to a grill. On North and Central beaches, charcoal and clean wood may burn in city fire rings or portable fire pits, and no fire is allowed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. The city sets out hot coal containers at North Beach, Central Beach and Glorietta Bay Park, and provides private security to watch beach fires in summer. Silver Strand State Beach, 4.5 miles south of the city on Highway 75, lists barbecue pits and fire rings among the amenities that may be available in its day-use area. [All of San Diego](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/locations/san-diego/) ### On the water A grill by salt water shows rust first where nobody looks: beneath the firebox, on the underside of each burner and on the heat shields, and a flame that suddenly runs uneven is usually salt eating through thin metal. ### Older housing stock Mature trees over older gardens drop leaves and twigs into grill hoods and grease trays, and a tray full of dry debris under a hot firebox is how many grease fires begin, so it is emptied on every visit here. ### Seasonal houses A caretaker watching a seasonal house should look for a propane smell, a cover blown off or a tank knocked over, and call rather than light the grill to test it, since a grill left idle needs its burners checked first. ## A visit in Coronado. In Coronado as anywhere, these four put the people at the grill in danger and mean the gas stays closed until we come: a gas smell at the grill, the hose or the tank, a grease fire that keeps burning with the knobs down, flame curling out behind the control panel, or a knob that turns to off while the burner stays lit.
