# Grill won't light? Silent igniter, dry burner or a tank that never opened

When a grill won't light, sort what you notice first. No click at all points to the igniter battery, module or wiring; a click with no hiss of gas points to the tank, its valve or a regulator stuck in low flow; a click and a hiss with no flame points to wet electrodes, blocked ports or wind. Pellet grills add the hot rod, the hopper and the outlet.

## At a glance.

A burner needs three things at the same moment to catch: gas leaving its ports, a spark or a glowing tip beside them, and air to mix with the fuel. One quiet minute with the lid up and every knob at off usually shows which of the three went missing.

Read the whole guide

### Before any attempt Lid raised, all knobs at off

The NFPA grilling tip sheet asks for an open lid every time a gas grill is lit.

### After a miss Knob off, then five minutes

Blaze and Lynx both give five minutes for unburned gas to drift away.

### Spark or glow Know which one your grill uses

Lynx heads use hot-surface igniters that glow orange instead of snapping.

### Where the owner stops At the tank coupling

Valves, orifices and every joint beyond the cylinder belong to a technician.

## Three clues to gather before the next try

Resist the urge to hold the button down and keep turning the knob. Raise the lid, set every control to off, and then make one careful attempt on a single burner while you pay attention to sound, smell and sight together. What you notice in those few seconds decides where the search begins.

Blaze's professional grill manual is blunt about the limit: if a burner has not caught within five seconds, turn it off and wait five minutes with the hood open before the next try. Lynx asks for the same five minutes before moving on to a different burner. Gas that pools under a closed hood or inside the firebox is the difference between a stubborn grill and a burst of flame at your face.

- Silence when the button is pressed or the knob is pushed: the ignition side has no power or no connection.
- A snap or a glow but no soft rush of gas: fuel is not arriving at that burner.
- Both a snap and a rush with nothing catching: the gas and the spark are not meeting, which is usually water, grease or wind.
- One burner catching while its neighbors stay dark: the supply is fine and the trouble belongs to the silent burners.

### A gas odor ends the attempt

If you can smell gas while trying, stop. Turn the knobs off, close the cylinder valve or the gas shutoff if you can reach it without leaning over the firebox, keep the lid open and keep every flame and switch away. NFPA's advice for a smell while cooking is to move away from the grill and call the fire department, and to leave the grill where it stands.

## When the burner never gets any gas

Lynx lists the questions it wants answered before anyone calls: is there fuel at all, is the main shutoff open, is the gas the kind the grill was built for, is the propane cylinder empty or freshly refilled, and has its valve actually been opened. Almost every no-hiss evening ends somewhere on that list, and none of it needs a tool.

A cylinder that feels light, a quarter-turn shutoff left crosswise to the pipe on a natural gas line, or a tank swapped while a knob was still open are the usual answers. That last one leaves the regulator's safety device limiting the flow to a trickle, which is covered step by step in our guide on resetting the propane regulator.

### One burner lights and the one beside it stays dark

When the left burner catches and the right one only hisses, the tank and hose are proven. The silent burner has its own short path: its valve, its orifice, its tube and its ports. Spider webs in that tube and ports sealed by rust or grease are the common finds, and a burner that lights from its neighbor through a carryover channel only when the channel is clean tells the same story.

Close on the electrode tip beside a burner port of a grill, the grates lifted away.

## Spark, glow or battery: how your grill makes its light

Grills make the light in one of three ways, and the checks differ. A push-button or rotary piezo makes a single sharp snap with no battery at all. A battery module ticks steadily while the button is held, and Napoleon's built-in manual names a dead or reversed battery and a loose electrode wire as the first suspects when burners light by hand but not by button. A hot-surface igniter, used by Lynx, makes no sound at all; it glows while the knob is pushed in.

Lynx asks owners with a silent grill to confirm the head has electricity by switching on its lights, then to remove the grates and briquette trays and watch each igniter with a small mirror while holding its knob in at the off position. Each glowing tip is a working igniter, and a dark one is a part for the visit.

- Piezo: one crisp snap per press, no battery to change.
- Battery module: a steady ticking; a fading tick means a tired cell.
- Hot-surface: silent, glowing orange under a small hood beside the burner.
- Pellet grill: an electric hot rod inside the firepot, run by the controller.

### A wet, greasy or bent electrode

After a storm or a pressure wash, the ceramic around an electrode holds a film of water that lets the spark leak to the frame instead of jumping to the burner. Leave the hood open in the sun to dry it out. Grease baked onto the tip does the same thing more slowly, and a tip knocked away from the burner by a grate dropped back in place sparks to nothing useful.

## The match-light test and what its answer means

Most makers print a hand-lighting procedure with a long match or a lighter held in a holder, and Lynx uses it as a diagnostic. If the burner lights by hand, the gas side works and the igniter is the problem. If it will not light by hand and you know gas is flowing, Lynx says to let the gas clear and check that burner for blockages. Follow only your own manual's method and holder, stand back from the grill, and skip the test altogether if the manual does not describe one.

An infrared or sear burner lights with a soft pop and then takes a minute or two to color across its ceramic face. If the ceramic has been soaked by rain or a hose, give it a full dry afternoon before judging it.

### Wind blowing the flame away

Lynx warns that wind blowing into the back of a grill or along the gap under the hood hurts performance and can even heat the control panel. A burner that catches and dies on a gusty day, then lights calmly on a still one, is telling you about the spot, not the parts.

## A pellet grill that never gets past startup

A pellet grill lights itself: the controller turns the auger to drop pellets into the firepot, powers a hot rod to ignite them and runs a small fan to feed the fire. If the display stays dark, check the outlet, its test-and-reset button and the plug before anything else. If the display works and nothing warms, look into the hopper for an empty chute or pellets that swelled after rain and jammed at the bottom.

Listen for the fan and the auger motor during startup. A fan that never spins, an auger that grinds without turning, or a firepot that fills with pellets and never smokes each point to a part that needs a technician.

### A firepot heaped with ash or unburned pellets

Repeated failed starts pile pellets in the firepot, and a warm rod under that heap can smolder later. Unplug the grill and let it cool completely before you look, and clear the firepot only the way your manual shows, never with your hand in a pot that has been running.

## Where to stop

Book once the grill has had the attempts its manual allows and still will not catch, when a fresh battery changes nothing, when a hot-surface igniter stays dark with power present, or when a pellet grill's rod never warms. Valves, orifices, the manifold and every joint beyond the cylinder coupling stay closed to an owner, nobody looks for gas with a flame, and nobody reaches into a firepot that has not fully cooled.

## Questions owners ask.

### Why does my grill light with a long match but not with its button?

Because fuel is reaching the burner and the ignition is not. The usual causes are a spent battery, a loose igniter wire or an electrode that is wet, greasy or bent away from the burner.

### Can cold weather stop a propane grill from lighting?

It can slow it. Weber notes that cold delays the pressure build-up in the hose and regulator, so give the tank a little longer after opening it before turning a knob.

### Is it safe to keep clicking until the burner catches?

No. Give each attempt about five seconds, then turn the knob off and wait five minutes with the lid open so unburned gas can drift away before trying again.

### My pellet grill shows a temperature but never heats. What should I check?

Pellets in the hopper, the auger turning and the fan running. If all three look right and the firepot still stays cold, the hot rod or the controller needs a technician.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Grill igniter repair

No spark, a weak spark or a spark in the wrong place: the grill's battery module, piezo button, electrodes, wires and hot-surface igniters tested and fixed.

### Grill valve and regulator repair

Stiff, leaking or unshuttable grill valves, worn knobs, tired regulators and cracked hoses replaced, with gas orifices matched to propane or natural gas.

### Pellet grill auger and controller repair

Jammed augers, dead hot rods, weak combustion fans, lying probes and failed controllers on pellet grills, traced and replaced with the maker's parts.

### Grill diagnostic visit

One visit to find why the grill will not light, heat or hold its flame: gas supply, burners, igniters, valves and any controller, each checked.

## More in common problems.

What a grill means when the igniter clicks without a flame, the burners stay low after a tank swap, the flame turns yellow, one end of the grate never gets hot or the grease flares every time the lid opens.

[The whole section](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/guides/common-problems/)

What the flame is telling you

### Yellow flames on a gas grill, and low ones: air, webs and a throttled regulator

Lazy orange flames lack air, small blue ones lack gas. Reading the flame with the grates lifted, the nest in the venturi, bypass after a tank swap and the sear burner that glows in patches.

What the flame is telling you

### A grill heating unevenly: one cold stripe, a weak burner or a tilted cart

Toast a grate full of bread and read the map. A burner giving less, grease-packed heat plates, foil, a cart out of level and wind across the hood, in the order they usually turn up.
