Error codes

# Grill error codes, read properly.

A code narrows the search and is also the thing most often read wrong: the same characters mean different things on different brands, and a fair number of the codes people look up are not failures at all — they are modes the appliance was left in.

## Find your code, make by make.

Type the characters exactly as the display shows them, or pick the make. Each code has a page of its own: what it means on that brand, what to check, and what not to do.

### Only confirmed codes

Every code here is taken from the manufacturer's own documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. If yours is not listed, book with the exact characters and the full model number, and we will tell you whether it is one we take.

## Three things before you look it up.

A code is a lead, not a verdict. These decide whether the answer you find will be any use.

01

### Write the code down as shown

The code, the flashing icon or the beep pattern, exactly as it appears. A photo is best, because turning the grill off or unplugging it can clear it.

02

### Photograph the rating label

Under the control panel of a grill head, inside the cart door, on the side of a pellet hopper. One code can mean an igniter on one make and a probe on another.

03

### Gas, fire or just heat?

If you smell gas, see flame behind the knobs or have a fire that will not die down, close the gas at the tank or shutoff and book today. A code on a grill that still lights and holds its heat can wait for a regular slot.

## What each kind of code means.

Codes fall into a handful of families. The family says more about the likely repair than the characters do — and one of them is not a repair at all.

[How to read a code](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/problems/grill-error-code/)

### Mode, not a failure

23 codes

Nothing on the grill has failed; the controller is showing a state it was put in on purpose. A shutdown cycle keeps the fan running to burn off the last pellets before the grill goes quiet, a keep-warm setting holds the cook box low, a demo mode lights the display without feeding fuel, and a pairing screen waits for a phone to connect. No part is needed; the button sequence in the manual, or simply letting the cycle finish, returns it to normal.

### Ignition

7 codes

The grill tried to start its fire and the controller never saw it take. On a pellet grill that is usually a hot rod burned out after hundreds of cooks, or a firepot full of ash so the new pellets smother; on a gas grill with electronic ignition it is a spark module, an electrode cracked or set too far from the burner, or a battery gone flat. Emptying the ash once the grill is cold and fitting a fresh battery are fair first steps; the hot rod and the module are a visit.

### Flame and gas flow

7 codes

The control lost its flame or never found enough gas to hold one. The common reasons are plain: a propane regulator that dropped into its low-flow safety mode because the tank valve was opened with a knob on, a tank running empty, wind across an open burner, or a flame sensor coated in grease. Knobs off, the tank closed and reopened slowly, then a relight usually settles the first; if you smell gas, walk away first, and the valve, the sensor and every fitting stay with a technician.

### Temperature and probes

14 codes

A probe is sending the controller a reading it cannot trust, or no reading at all: the grill's own temperature sensor coated in smoke and grease, its lead pinched or melted, or a meat probe unplugged, wet or reading far outside what any cook box could reach. The grill then overshoots, stalls or shuts down to be safe. Wiping the sensor once the grill is cold and reseating the probe in its jack are reasonable steps; a sensor that still reads wrong is a visit.

### Pellet feed and auger

6 codes

Pellets stopped reaching the firepot. Sometimes the hopper simply ran low and a pellet bridge formed over the auger; more often damp pellets swelled into a hard plug inside the auger tube, or the auger motor strains and stalls against it. Emptying the hopper of soft or crumbled pellets and refilling with dry ones is a fair first step; clearing a packed auger tube, a sheared pin or a motor that hums without turning is a visit.

[LOW HEAT](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/error-codes/twin-eagles-low-heat/) [E1](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/error-codes/weber-e1/) [E7](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/error-codes/weber-e7/) [E9](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/error-codes/weber-e9/) [E21](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/error-codes/weber-e21/) [Low Temp Alarm](https://bbqgrillrepair.center/error-codes/coyote-low-temp-alarm/)

### Fans and airflow

1 code

The fire is not getting the air the controller expects. On a pellet grill the combustion fan under the hopper may be seized with grease and dust or wired loose, or the firepot's air holes may be packed with ash; on gas grills with an electric cooling fan behind the control panel, a stalled fan trips a warning before the knobs get hot. Clearing ash from a cold firepot is safe to do; a fan that will not spin is a visit.

### Controller and display

7 codes

The controller itself reported trouble, or stopped answering: a display that flickers or shows segments missing, buttons that no longer respond after rain got behind the panel, a board whose relays stick, or an app that will not keep its connection. A full power cycle, done as the manual describes with the grill cold, clears a passing glitch; a code that returns, or any sign of water behind the display, means a board or a keypad, and that is a visit.

### Power

3 codes

The grill is not getting clean power: a GFCI outlet on the patio that tripped in rain, an extension cord too long or too thin, a transformer for the lights or the rotisserie that failed, or a power supply inside a pellet grill that sags when the hot rod draws. Resetting the GFCI once with the outlet dry, and plugging straight into it, clears many. A trip that repeats, or a burning smell, means the grill stays unplugged until a technician has looked.

## Questions about the codes.

### The code on my grill is not listed. What next?

A code gets a page here only after we have read it in the maker's own manual. Until then, type the code or the flashing icon into the booking and the technician reads it against the manual for your serial.

### Two grills show the same code. Same problem?

Not necessarily. Each maker writes its own table, and the same letters can mean an igniter that failed on one pellet grill and a probe reading nonsense on another. Read every code alongside the rating label of that grill.

### Can I clear a grill code myself?

Sometimes. Check that the grill is plugged into a working outlet, that the hopper has dry pellets, that the probe is seated and clean and that the tank or gas line is open, then run the shutdown and restart the manual describes. A code back within a day points to a part, and after a gas smell or a fire, skip the restart and book.

### The controller shows a code but the grill cooks fine. Is anything broken?

Maybe not. Some displays are simply reporting a state: a shutdown cycle burning off the last pellets, a keep-warm setting, a demo mode or an app pairing step. Those pages explain how to leave the mode with no part at all.
